Incident Operations / station stats
« on: April 27, 2005, 02:33:56 PM »
on a side issue..... to use O2, advanced resus. is required...
Try getting on a course if your not an instructor in something!

If a brigade/group has enough nouse and/or money to get the gear, then good on 'em. However, I would hope they didnt complain when other brigades get the stuff issued out by region/state....

Is a discussion that will never be solved, as human nature has proven over the years..... think of it like "keeping up with the jones'...." We'll never be happy unless we have what the next person does, and likewise, will always want something better...

Vicious circle isnt it....

Yes I am all for moving forward but at the same time not to forget what the people before us have done, how many of you still keep old gear and bits and pieces, sometimes we are a little disposable.

I have my little stash of bits...... but your right we can be a little disposable at times, there's certainly no denying it.

it only takes one or two people to quit and you will have them for sale somewhere

Only too true, we had a batch of leather pager holders made once (for the original style all those years ago).... a few years later we a few being sold at the local second hand shop. Thankfully the owner was very understanding and returned them without to much hasstle.........

Tradition runs strong in a lot of people, look at the majority of comments posted about the logo so far..... Whilst some of these traditions should be maintained others need to evolve with the service.

This is where the question of respect comes in. Is it disrespectful to let this happen? In some peoples eyes most certainly (and in most cases i would probably agree) But like a child growing up and leaving home, at some point we need to realise that the times have moved on.

Now the catch is to ensure the "newbies" recognise and understand these traditions so their legacy will continue on long after we have gone......

SA Firefighter General / BA Operators
« on: April 26, 2005, 08:03:05 AM »
Its an interesting dilema to have sets but no operators, one which im sure is getting harder to avoid as time goes on. There is a responsability as you work up through the chain of people to ensure that the brigades training requirements are satisfied to cover the standards.

Are there many people from that brigade that actually want to do BA Training????
I guess if there are then this obligation has been failed to be met.

Dont know if de-registering them as BA is the way to go..... it would depend on how long they have been without operators, and what the capabilities of the other brigades in the area to cover.

GT is right, there is no excusses for not providing PPE anymore. We all have a right to PPE that will best protect us when we need it, and should the day come that something goes wrong, then Im sure OH&S will have a field day......

I disagree, BA has a 20min stint at the most...... there is potential to be working much harder, for longer when away

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens
« on: April 20, 2005, 06:12:20 PM »
You will only recieve a second page if the siren is manually activated. The number of places where a siren can be heard but no paging are now few and far between (infact not really worth a hige amount of worry by my account)...... However you will find that a siren will always go off before the pagers, handy for a bit of a 'heads up' as such.

Personally I dont have a problem with second hand appliances..... as long as they are up to the standard, in good condition... and working properly!

I believe MFS have a rolling turn over where the high turnout stations get vehicles replaced quite frequntly, and outer stations recieve hand-me-downs from there. An idea which i have no problem with if the brigade recieving is low turnout, and the vehicle is in good nic.....

The catch question is 'why was the vehicle made second hand in the first place?'

Terrorism / What would you do?
« on: April 18, 2005, 03:22:00 PM »
Ive been thinking long and hard about this one..... and im still not overly certain of my answer.

As a hazmat operator, you would think a call would come rather quickly. I agree most with MCFSFF, it would be a call to make on the day, after all we all have families to consider, and remember that i/you come first when our safty is at stake.

The devistation of such an attack would be widespread, and there would be no shortage of things to do else where.......

dunno..... my verdict remains out on this one.......

interesting question though, very challenging to answer. Its a decision/event we will hopefully never see......

Exercises that emphasise the effects of a road crash have a lot of merit. They will never work 100%, as its human nature to test the limits, and after time we know where these limits are, and dont try to exceed them.

But if we can make at least 1 person think about their actions on the road, and the consequences they may have, then it has been a success.

..... And if the day comes where they do have an accident (hopefully not fatal), everything they have been shown will hit home. Only then can the real lesson be learn.

Its unfortunate that experience is something you only get right after you needed it.....

Why pay for the training of volunteers, when the money could go towards employing/training more SAAS personell, and opening more stations...?

Because this state relies heavily on input from its vollies. You also run the risk of "flooding" the scene. I would much rather have a sensible amout of people there who can all actively add to a job, be it fire, rescue or ambo that can assist each other in the task at hand.

Efficency can be a good thing, and knowledge should be shared. Especially when a common goal is at hand....

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens
« on: April 14, 2005, 11:21:31 AM »
For people that have lived in an area for a long time, there can be some comfort in knowing that the service is still there and are still active.

But what about new people that move into the area?
How do you get the information out there about what it means?
As james mentioned, the changing circumstances of those living around us.

We have mentioned it in the local paper a few times, although i sometimes wonder how effective it really is.

Personally I like them, and if the community remains well educated about what it all means, its a fantastic way of passing simple set public info messages.

more food for thought......

I think you'll find its there for competition purposes only (as there is a dedicated medic put into the vehicle). SES generally dont have any markings on their helmets (aside from names and the occasional "RESCUE" sticker.

You shouldnt be seeing anything like that in the field....

SAAS / SAAS Assist
« on: April 11, 2005, 08:11:00 AM »
In My Humble Opinion:

We have looked at this on a local level on several occasions. The times where we have been involved with assisting SAAS have been good experiences.

They are only more than willing to bring the ambulance down to give us a run down on how everything works. It doesnt happen all that often, but is a welcome refresher.

Most of the stuff we do is at the direction of ambo's anyway, and if you really want to critique the senior first aid course on the casualty handling side of things then we could blow the course out by another day at the least.

The pupose of any course we do is to give us a basic knowledge of the job to be done, after that it is only training and practice that will develop those skills. The fact that some of that training might be with SAAS makes no difference.....

In the end, if they need help, im only to willing to lend a hand. After all if you dont understand then all you have to do is ask. In return its always a welcome sight to have them on standby at large incidents just in case.

Anyways, how well it all works really depends on the relationship at a local level i guess....

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens

1: How many brigades are still using fire sirens?

I know we still have it connected to fixed alarms, for major daytime incidents and sounding fire ban days. As well as weekly testing...

2: What are peoples thoughts on the phasing out of these sirens?

Are they simply an annoyance to the community or is it a good way of letting people know somethings happening....

Peoples thoughts?

Country Fire Service / Strike Team/Task Force Deployments
« on: April 10, 2005, 12:46:53 AM »
A roster system has great potential. It gives brigades time to find out if they have crew for the day, and if not... to arrange crew from a neighbouring brigade.

You should find it works well, if crew make the propper prior arrangements!

We to assemble on a road which will be travelled to the fire, and yes it has been known to take a long time.

Region 1 are now ment to respond Strike Teams from neighbouring groups as individual units to meet on site. This is to improve the the ETA of assistance.

All Equipment discussion / new level 3 gear (LION)
« on: April 08, 2005, 01:27:11 PM »
Well it appears Ill have to wait for a bit longer before I  get to play with the new gear. Group changed their mind, and we are now getting 1 set only in the entire group, instead of 15 sets.

I wasnt at the last meeting, but have been told about the following.....

Strangely enough, the decision was not souly based on the budget. It would seem that there are a few problems with the "administration and maintainance" side of things....

ie. How often does the gear get cleaned/inspected?
     Who decides?
What happens is any gear is deemed to be stuffed?
How much is it going to cost?
etc etc......

There are now concerns being expressed about degregation due to UV, and storage methods. Apparently the MFS are experiencing difficuly with how their turnout pants are stored, its causing creasing and fractures in the fabric......

So, now we wait......

Country Fire Service / New or Old Logo
« on: April 07, 2005, 01:59:01 PM »
Im sure when they initially released the new logo it was a brigade choice as to change or not...... funny how these choices disappear as time goes on.

We could once again start talking about professionalism and appearance, when trucks rock up with different logos..... lets just hope there are no plans to change the arm patches for those who still have them.....
