[well done. Only "problem" perhaps is your brigade then needs a new captain! (lots of brigades don't seem to do the sucession planning thing very well - not that I'm saying yours is like that).

[/quote]

I agree Darius but I have worked on my succession plan and the brigade do have options with my moving up!

Thanks Pip & Firetruck...

Yes, maybe I am a bit of a pioneer..I was the first & only female Capt on EP...but I can only do it with the confidence and backing of my peers!  :-)

Maybe that's a Group specific thing Mike..I know that we allow a proxy to vote...but not absentee..if you're not there...you don't get the priviledge...

I agree with this system..if you allowed anyone to vote, there would be too much room for stacking...

I might need to change my name...I'm now a DGO..

I think that photos certainly have their place but as mentioned...it needs to be when the situation is well in hand...or when it's going to the fan and you have to sit and watch...

I do remember thinking (for about a millisecond) during Black tuesday that I wished I had a camera with me...I've since bought a digital camera...but I think I'll buy a smaller, cheaper one that can ride with my kit..

Many photos taken have been used in evidence during the coronial..beware of taking them..

The only good fire season for us is when we get unseasonal rains..

I agree with Robert34 and there is an article out by Bushfire CRC in relation to our up coming season and it's potential to be bad.

It all relates to preparedness and having communities assist...and no room for complacency!

I agree Toast...in an urban brigade or area...go to the station..it's probably less than 5 mins to it..I live 10 mins from my station.

Our response area covers approx 20kms in each direction.

im not a huge fan of the whole truck chasing thing... IMO very cowboyish....

what happens whenever you beat the appliance there... just stand around looking like a moron (dont take that personally, just a general statement). i understand why you do it, but personally i think the responding crew should respond on the truck, not just rock up in private vehicles....

Except in our brigade..it's certainly NOT cowboyish...we only leave the station WHEN we know that we have other crew on the way to collect....and I don't stand around looking like a moron..because most times I am IC  :-)

I can understand if you leave without having organised crews..it all depends on what direction the incident is...it works for us but that doesn't mean I condone it for other brigades...

If the lt1 lives that far away..he should carry his PPC with him and chase the truck...don't make it wait for him!

I work approx 20kms from my station..I rarely leave with the truck..I go straight to the incident and find a phone booth on the way to change  :-D

Our appliance will often leave the station with 1 or 2 but pick up along the way...whatever works for each occasion...

All I can tell you is that if you have a fire going and a dry slot occurs...you will have to extract every digit known... :-D

It has the potential to create explosive and unpredictable fire behaviour...as for time of day..you should know that it always happens just before a meal time

I believe it's something to factor into Group Response Plans..if they predicted a dry slot it should change the response to a 4th or 5th alarm immediately.

I'd suggest that 98% of people here are overopinionated idiots, who frankly, don't know what the filtered they are talking about. Reminds me of a certain Auxillary brigade, attched to no group.

thanks for that Toast but I wouldn't consider myself to be an overopinionated idiot...and I try to create subjects of interest and not gossip..

oh how lovely that news is!

can that occur anywhere or is restricted to certain areas?

sorry firetruck...anywhere...the article is very interesting..even responsible for lightening strikes etc..

It proved to be a valuable point of arguement when I was on the stand...

Not a great piece of info as firies though...except it will change our response plans SIGNIFICANTLY if they predict a dry slot and we have a fire going!  :-o

During my evidence in the Black Tuesday coronial...I was alerted to some new weather research and events known as "dry slots".

this research finally made sense of the fire behaviour we witnessed.

It will be something that we need to consider with IMT and planning...

A dry slot has the ability to drop the RH from 20% to 3% and dry twigs 6mm in diameter in an hour..effectively creating explosive and unpredictable fire behaviour.

here's a link to more info..

In the last 6 years there has been 200+ occasions of this occuring..

Every brigade operates differently to each other..we have to respect that they are happy with how they run and not be judgemental or critical...as my grandmother would say "each to their own" as long as they are performing and working within SOP's...

It's more important that we work as a team and accept differences..

We've just received a memo from our RC asking us to consider allowing the entry of a satellite brigade..personally, I'm against this one, especially as we already have 15 brigades in our group!

and these guys have already scared us with their cowboy attitudes!  :-(

Manuel, only Capts or a proxy can vote at a Group AGM..so, the number of votes cast is already set.

I would expect that each situation is judged on it's merits..eg if it's a life threatening situation or if Burnside Car1 was at risk of being lost...tow it..

We had lengthy discussions about some appliances wanting tow chains..now this I am totally opposed to ...snatch strap yes, chain...absolutely NOT!.. imagine the OHS if a chain whipped and collected some  :-o

name out of the hat is just plain ridiculous, it goes to luck instead of knowledge/suitability etc.

I agree totally firetruck..at least if there is a casting vote, it's done by someone impartial (hopefully!)

If the vote is then even after that process...the chair has the casting vote...obviously as a secret ballot..

Obviously each incident needs to be judged on its merits..

People need to be reminded that we are volunteers and do give up our time freely...BUT employers wouldn't be happy to know that you were away from work for 4hrs to retrieve a bogged vehicle..

There was an issue on the weekend...landowner buring old hay and loppings...creating much smoke near township...some complained..SAPOL were going to call us to extinguish..under these circumstances, we have no right to extinguish, it wasn't threatening property or out of control..

Sometimes it's our efficiency and abilities that get us jobs..and it doesn't look good to say ..sorry not in our j&p's ..

I think that the RC should know the Regs before the meeting starts...the only time I've ever seen the constitution cited is at an AGM!

Last AGM was an absolute experience...the constitution was being referred to, some were moving motions that weren't constitutional etc..gets a bit testy at times..

As per the Regs...if it's down to 2..another vote is conducted and the winner is declared...none of this in the hat or out stuff  :-P

I wonder if they have enough people etc...why don't they have their own brigade  :?

Certainly in the circumstance over here...they should be their own brigade and not a satellite.  There is too much distance between them for a start..and they are their own community...

I think that the Satellite Station Idea would be really good for South Australia after all its doing good in Victoria  :-D

It could be Robert34 if you have the right people..we have a district that want to be a satellite brigade..they are cowboys and not interested in towing the org line..I say if you want to be a brigade, be one in your own right..but that's only in reference to the one I'm talking about.  :-)
