Country Fire Service / Re: Sub Brigades (Stations)
« on: July 24, 2006, 02:45:24 PM »
i think another issue that comes to light regarding sub stations is that the appliance/s based in the sub station can sometimes not be looked after as well, as it is off by itself. Therefore things could break, malffunction, go missing and it may be arriving at a job when the problem is noticed.

name out of the hat is just plain ridiculous, it goes to luck instead of knowledge/suitability etc.

Obviously each incident needs to be judged on its merits..

People need to be reminded that we are volunteers and do give up our time freely...BUT employers wouldn't be happy to know that you were away from work for 4hrs to retrieve a bogged vehicle..

There was an issue on the weekend...landowner buring old hay and loppings...creating much smoke near township...some complained..SAPOL were going to call us to extinguish..under these circumstances, we have no right to extinguish, it wasn't threatening property or out of control..

Sometimes it's our efficiency and abilities that get us jobs..and it doesn't look good to say ..sorry not in our j&p's ..

I thought you were able to extinguish if the burn posed a threat to public safety (in this case smoke drifting over roads and lowering vision), but i suppose the decision to  extinguish is taken job by job.

From the trade show they were interested in the casuality simulation dummy's and I was interested in some of the products.

man, I was up at STC this weekend and heard it took 3 BA course asistants to move one of the dummies, its that heavy.

and yes, that monitor looks like a penis.

haha, I didn't see a dummy over about 70-80kg... Poor BA assistants need some weight training

na these are dummies they brought up from somewhere, probably the RCR comps. There was only one dummy that required 3 to move it, i think it was more like 95kg.

i agree with backburn. Personally, I don't care at all what we jobs we do. I feel that if a person is in a time of need, we're there to help.

Not sure if anyone is into Adam Hills the comedian, but he is raising money for an orphanage in Cambodia by selling t-shirts with his catch phrase on it, "GO YOU BIG RED FIRE ENGINE!". Now "Go you big white fire engine" just doesn't have the same ring to it - does it :| Also reiterates that the public perception of a fire truck is red.

for a comedian, thats not very funny. :?

Personally I prefer white, but red would be kinda cool.

« on: July 17, 2006, 12:09:43 PM »
even though people whinge about the sirens going off, I feel it is an important part of community fire awareness here in the hills, especially during fire season. I feel people will react more effectively to hearing a siren and seeing smoke on a 40 degree day. By all means respond with pagers, but i think maybe sirens should be used for responses to fires and maybe dangerous HAZMATS. Sirens for fires though should probably only be set off DURING FIRE SEASON or on a day where the incident could change rapidly.

my brigade currently runs with a setup of 1 x captain, 3 x lieutenants, 3 x SFF's. That way there is usually always someone to sit up front and offer capt/looeys assistance if needed. It seems to work fine at the moment.

Why waste your time with things like that. We use the simple bucket and sponge with that truck cleaner stuff. Works fine, if a couple of ya do it it takes 20 mins tops. best of all is you only use about 10 litres of water!

we just go under the old "if it looks like it needs to be cleaned, we'll clean it" mentality. it works fine.
