Unfortunately cost has been and always will be an issue. The budget is  not a bottomless pit and CFS have to be accountable to the government and the wonderful public for what is spent. Still see people sending letters into the paper every now and then suggesting we should have the canadair super scoopers here. Even though they are way more expensive and not suitable for areas like the Adelaide hills. Not to mention they are friggin slow.

Incident Operations / Re: High Fire Danger 9/12/06

Gday,

Well i dont know about up in the hills but down here in the South East it was a shocker.  Pretty much incident free though.

Only had 1 minor grass fire extinguished very quickly and the contiuation of the Bog Lane Fire, which at one point was posing some threat to a shack.

But luckily very little activity across the state which is good!

Which was ably put out by the guys/girls in a red truck. lol
Just received the weather page for sunday and it will be alot cooler but high levels of lightning.

I am pretty sure that the 34P`s are a Darley HE500 still, the 500 being gallons per minute. Which equates to about 1900 litres per minute. The type 2`s are 750gpm or 3000 litres per minute.

Saw Lucindale BWC (17?) for the first time today. It is an ex milk tanker. Whats the deal with these do the CFS have to go and source a prime mover from somewhere to haul it or do they have arrangements set up with local contractors/companies?

Yeah well they can only put on the pager the information they are given. Some people are vague or get confused when they ring emergency services.

Well you are not going to be ablt to buy ex MFS Scanias for a long time. They are still in the process of getting some half decent trucks out to the regional MFS stations.

Looking at the trouble the CFS is having now filling strike teams for 2+ days and interstate deployments they may need to find a new path to go down. I dont have any suggestions but at this time of year a lot of people are flat out at work and just cant take time off to go. Especially without pay. Not that money is everything but it helps.

« on: December 06, 2006, 07:55:07 PM »
To answer a question that had been asked on this forum, communications will still go through Mt Gambier fire on GRN 195 when the day staffing begins. Occasionally if the comms room is not manned the first responding appliance can log on with Adelaide fire on 154. This rarely happens now but is available to us.

A question for our MFS full time counterparts. Do you get paid if you go on an interstate deployment? If so do you go when you are rostered on for your 4 days? Or do you go voluntarily on your days off?

Heard a farmer on the a radio talkback show whinging that since CFS went to trunked radios that no one can listen to them anymore. Of course you can you just need a trunking scanner to do it. Most people know that, dont they???

I have it on good authority that the CFS group was sent an invitation and Littlehampton was actually on the list to attend.

Mt Barker CFS/SES wasnt actually co-located the members there were members of both services until about the mid 90`s. A couple of the vehicles were dual badged and they responded to all types of emergencies. Not exactly sure of the reasons behind the split. Would be hard to find any land there that would be big enough and central enough to locate both services.

The MFS situation is very different to many other industries. Some like road transport are having problems getting young people interested in their field. The MFS certainly has many people almost knocking the door down to get a job, but there were a few years there when there was only a small or no intake which they are now paying the price for.

SAMFS / Re: Mt Gambier MFS going full time
« on: November 29, 2006, 03:11:26 PM »
Well it will be interesting for everyone. Some things are still to be worked out. The 1st appliance will certainly be on the road quicker during the day but we will still need to take out the other appliance(s) as you said. Also we (retainers)will be the only ones responding to all night/weekend/public holiday incidents. Its a start I guess, will have to build an accomodation block before we can get too carried away.

Yeah they are increasing the intakes to try and cover this issue. The people that are involved in the current drill squad apart from the Mt Gambier ones are people who missed out on the last one. There used to be only 1 intake per year...
