SASES / Re: SES P1 responses when the SCC opens
« on: April 27, 2009, 06:10:26 PM »
1 SES has a very firm policy on P1 responses - if individual units/teams are going full noise to storm jobs without good reason then they are in breach & need to be dealt with by the SES,
2 The 132500 number is a NATIONAL number for SES response, developed so that the 000 system doesn't get jammed during major storm flood events - this is what the fire services fought for.
Finally don't judge the whole service on the actions of a few ****heads, I for one never went to Storm/flood jobs P1/ unless told to i.e. Renmark storm event, Pinnaroo storm event e.t.c.
I suggest if you have an issue contact the SES Chief officer.

While I'm wearing my civilian hat agree, it goes as I said. In the past I have turned out Fire crews to flood/storm events & was questioned why I did that. Then it was explained to me what I said above - and further if it continually happens one service in particular puts in for a bigger slice of the pie! At of course to the detriment of the others
Remember all of these things are decided by paid public servants(regardless of the uniform they may wear). The DO's are also cut from the same cloth - they are looking at their next promotion, not protecting their current service IMHO.
So tribalism doesn't come into it Pip.
Personally I think the current situation in SA is very poor - in a number of areas not just this one. And as a current payer of ESL I'm certainly not happy with what goes on in the state of the crow eater.
However I'm sure things will change one day, just onequestion Numbers what if theSES is the closest rsource - do they still need firies to hold their hand when going P1? Sometimes having unqualified ESO's tear arsing to a job is more pain than its worth
On that note have a good nite & stay safe

It happens in most states.
Not sure if you guys understand how budgets work but here it goes:-
Fire services - lead agency fire/hazmat (thats what you are budgeted for)
State Emergency Service - lead agency storm flood.
Budgets are based on forcasted spend - usually a mixture of historical data & likely activity for the forcoming year.
Now my guess is that SA Fire services would be "over budget" this year (deployments to Victoria & increased tasking).
Therefore fire service chiefs would be a bit nervous about going further over budget - especially in these times of economic restraint!
And by making the civilians wait a bit for low  priority help they may become more self sufficient (this actually does happen in other states).
I know it seems stupid but that is the real world, infact yourserviceheads would be looking at this on at least a weekly basis.
And if you think volunteers cost nothing, think again:- power, fuel, wear &  tear on equipment etc.
Finally how many of your brigades have the right type & qty of equipment? And are trained? And based on past experience if warranted the SDO would have activated additional crews (even fireservice ones).
If you really want to get wet & cold - join your local unit. If not sit back & relax - until nextfireseason of course.

Quite correct - in metro areas. However the unit concerned was already active on a P4 task so a quick turn around no big deal really. I thought so anyway
Anyway stay dry - we are loving the rain here!
cheers

Country Fire Service / Re: PPE
« on: April 19, 2009, 05:41:38 PM »
No Bill it doesn't - otherwise everyone would have to be issued their own BA wouldn't they?
However there is a bit about hygiene, there is nothing wrong with issuing second hand PPE to newbies as long as it is clean & in good repair (boots however are a no no,& I would be suspect about gloves as well).
And as for helmets if it looks grubby inside or had a hard life (or its previous owner was known not to give a toss), then it shouldn't be issued.
I would have thought it was all common sense - woops sorry I forgot!

No mate the wild men of southern NSW didn't have a use for them in the past (only the boys from Paddington  ).
Anyway dark green isn't my colour.

Hmmm Numbers
seems like that to me too (somethings should not be discussed at all even if it is constructive criticism)- thats why I don't play in the sand pit much anymore :-D
Anyway hope everyone has fun with their chaps - I just got a new pair!
cheers

Yep had OJT on the sprinters, & we have had several guys driving the green buses at several incidents. At one job all three buses were driven by "orange people" - no big deal. As was said things are different outside of metro areas.
cheers

:-D No worries MT - I just don't know whats going on with Andrew Mac these days . My bigest concern would be trying to keep the "Orange Peril" from trying to abseil off the thing! And Boardy is right - where does their boat fit into all of this?
Have a good one cheers

You are starting to sound so cruel Andrew :-D

165
Ah no Darren - need to spread the egotist out not clump them altogether
And yes Boardy you are of course quite correct - you paramedics are just so preceptive :-D (did you see All Saints last night? - Made me spew :-D )

166
I saw where MT was coming from - and realised it was all stiring in good fun! Just out of interest - several Orange peril units have done BFF1 for exactly the reasons stated, they work on the fire ground.
It was a pity while in SA it wasn't offered to us (my unit), since we were stepping off our boats onto the fireground & actually fighting fires (the GO at the time didn't think we needed it).
So great idea I reckon (considering the fire risk that area of the state seems to face every summer)& Mac I've never come across a firefighting type person who I would say hated us - they just wanted to take our toys away
cheers & have a good one

Country Fire Service / Re: Get Ready For the Big One

Fantastic article thanks. A couple of thoughts on the "gap year" idea. My guess is they would be used in lower risk, lower skilled areas - not frontline stuctural or USAR (for the rescue types)tasks.
The new people who joined the military as a career the same time as gap year was people are saying the gap year people are getting the good jobs (my daughter joined the navy last year & will only be joining a ship in two weeks) - said that gap year guys got a higher priority & better postings).
And like any good National service system there has to be a good filtering system.
And at least it will give the younger generations the basics around emergency management, think about it for a while - thousands of trained "citizens" to allow for a proper surge capability (better than the UFU idea ).
And obviously there would be some major hurdles that need to be overcome - proper training for officers/leaders(egomaniacs need not apply), proper training programs delivered by competent qualified trainers, funding, equipment etc.
I can see a combined "basic" course for volunteer fire & SES, covering safety, command, how to work in teams, map reading - all of that stuff including basic fire fighting & rescue/storm damage! What a great idea - pity it won't happen!Time to write to mister Rudd I think :-D
Again thanks for a great read.
cheers

Considering the information below I'm a touch perplex (but not surprised) that SA isn't forecasting something a bit more significant:-
Peak wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected over the Lower Western, Riverina and western parts of the Upper Western district during Tuesday, especially near the front. Towns in the affected area include Broken Hill, Wentworth, Ivanhoe, Balranald, Deniliquin, Hay, Griffith, Narrandera, Wilcannia and Tibooburra.
The very windy conditions will produce extensive areas of raised dust and will result in very high to extreme fire danger conditions.
Over Alpine areas of the Southwest Slopes, Southern Tablelands and ACT, winds will strengthen to average 60 to 70 km/h by late Tuesday with gusts to around 110 km/h about the peaks.
As it will most likely miss Adelaide but hit areas of East Region - I would have thought similar warnings should apply to the Mallee, Riverland & south east- oh well, from past experience I'm not surprised after all if it doesn't impact Adelaide it don't count
I'm also surprised SES teams are possibly being assembled for Victoria, for the same reason I didn't think it was a good idea to send multitudes of CFS teams on the weekend of Black Saturday - there is still a significant risk at home. Who was it who said "look after your own backyard first". Victoria is a good example of don't put all of your eggs in one basket
On that note I'm off to have several beers & pray to the gods of safe air travel :-D
cheers

Mac - I KNOW!!! The change is coming over from the south west passing over SA before reaching us therefore I would be pretty safe to assume that what I said could infact be relevant to you guys!
Check out the forcast maps, if you don't believe me.
Anyway Mac you are more than likely right - after all nothing ever exciting happens in SA

Robert the warnings for NSW are already out for tomorrow - not happy flying to Sydney in the afternoon at the height of the storm :-(

no offence taken MT - mac weren't you one of the forum members wanting to go to vic in the first 12 hours? - and yet you don't train?
Yes the politics stuffs everything up I'm surprised that it seems that the troops have little confidence in the middle management (who are volunteers after all) & yet the service claims to be professional? Rank structure is there for a reason.
Maybe one fire service is the go afterall?
strange times indeed :-o

Thanks for clearing that up cheers
