Can anyone tell me how many hoses you can get on the new 34 model trucks comming out this year? The photos show that there is not much locker space. Can you put stuff in other places? Also whats with the new tools eg: shovels etc?

The snap lock tools i don't like at all the weight of the rake hoes has nearly doubled!! As for locker space and hoses the 34 comes with a standard rural stowage of 64mm filler, 1 64mm x 30m, 2 38mmx30m, 2 25mm lay flat. We've taken out the BA brackets in ours and put in a quick-fill pump, and on the drivers side there is enough room to put chainsaw and equipment, more fuel, ration packs, gas cooker, and still a little space to spare. One locker doesn't have a shelf in it but we had problems with our appliance and for our trouble Moore's was kind enough to donate one. However if you want a shelf i believe Moore's will install one for around the $120.00 mark (I Think).

Our doors are automated with pager responses as are the lights in the station and the back door unlocks as well, a very handy thing!! As for the security of that, at Goolwa we've never had a problem with people coming in when the doors go up for a call, but thats at Goolwa!! :|

Was under the belief that to do RCR you also had to have the "respond to road crash" module completed as well??

Yeah kat i know what you mean but at the time of call the person wasn't deceased and the patient being large all crew at the scene were needed to carry the person out. But as always if you don't try you don't know and I've definitely suffered no ill effects (I THINK)lol  :-D.

But definitely agree that young F.F shouldn't be exposed unless absolutely necessary!!!

Sorry kat got mixed up with the names my last post was meant to be directed to medevac!!

They responded them again, almost half an hour later: :?
00:28:05  03-01-06  CT174 Cat2 Adelaide-crafers Hwy, Leawood Gardens 131 J12 MULTIPLE HAZARDS

FYI, MVA wasn't all that serious...  Your standard rollover at 200km/h.. the driver's injuries weren't life threatening... (To my current knowledge at this time etc etc)

Off thread but here's a good one for you! At a job on Xmas day when called to a MVA rollover in the Goolwa beach carpark and warned to expect entrapments as was a high speed crash. When we arrived we were first on scene and found a car half crushed, expecting the worse was told the driver had run off. We found the driver who turned out to be a 14y.o drunk girl who admitted rolling the stolen car at nearly 200kph and did not have one single scratch on her, I've seen some good escapes before but that one just tops the lot.

Was at a job when Stirling came up on air for the MVA, by the time we got back to the station and turned the scaneer on they had arrived and it sounded slightly serious?? Curious as to why SAAS cancelled the job and then recalled themselves??

On the topic of Jan 11 Mount Osmond fire and COQ, Mundoo  group was responded as strke team at about 5 in the afternoon but halfway there was told to do COQ, Goolwa 34 to Bridgewater, Currency Creek to Stirling and Mount Compass i believe to Eden hills yet when we arrived all stations had their pumpers with crews sitting there!! It was a complete waste of time (my opinion only) and resources!!

But my opinion is that there should be a COQ organised if there are no near resources and theres a chance of another call!!

minuteso a good job of responding fire/rescue probably 70-80% of the time within a good time frame but quite a few serious accidents of late there can be a deficit of up to 10-15miutes!! If they follow the Road Crash Resource Directory which their service signed like everyone else then it should be happening 99% of the time.

The RCR directory states that if SAPOL or SAAS receive a MVA job outside of the Metropolitan area of Adelaide then fire/rescue must be immediately responded.

80% is good but high 90's would be a lot better. :-)

Dont know if this is the right section but does anyone know when Hahndorf are taking delivery of their type 2 pumper?

If this is true then CFS have just proved again that they toss a coin to decide where a truck goes, surely a type2 would be better served at such brigades as Belair, salisbury, dalkeith, seaford, Morphett V...etc...

« on: December 17, 2005, 02:09:44 PM »

Just watch out in BA environments (House fires, Flamm. Gas etc) mate, they are not "Instringently" (Spelling) Safe. Meaning they are not housed / protected from giving off sparks / static electricity etc.

Just be careful.

Generally we only use the UHF's during mopup once all the action is over!! Just out of curiosity are the VHF protected from giving off sparks because the VHF radios seem to be of a poorer quality than the UHF's that we carry??

I really can't understand why some groups won't let the brigades have them because they are great for use when crews are down a gully and need to talk to the pump operator and there aren't enough VHF radios to go around etc..

You certainly did get taken for a ride Robert34, you obviously have a real nice group officer . We also carry three UHF handhelds on both our appliances as well as the truck based uhf, they come in very handy when there are multiple people on traffic control and not enough VHF radios to go around. We also sometimes give them to BA teams to use in a house fire or something like that. Very handy little things those UHF radios, and our group was totally supportive of the idea. Any group that wouldn't support something like UHF radios would have to be nuts i reckon.

Both the Goolwa units carry UHF radio's they come in handy for heaps of things, we also use them to talk to SAPOL at times if they need additional info to get to the job we are at!!

Incident Operations / Re: Long Plains silo rescue
« on: December 14, 2005, 01:43:24 PM »
Could it have been some type of atmospheric monitoring, or light weight BA for confined space ops, as Burnside are carrying composite cylinders??
Speculating! :-D

Was at the station at the time this incident went down and burnside came up on our new scanner with SHQ talking about their atmospheric detection equipment!!

Would think that with the number of silo's in the mid north and around the state that there would be more CFS/SES resources trained in high angle/confined space rescue within the wheat growing regions of the state??

If food stamps could get us a stand alone rescue truck then we'd have one but there aren't that many $$$$ being thrown around out there! But i see your point going out of area you wouldn't have to worry about there being no rescue gear in your area!!

Even on our 2000 model 24P there is no space it's completely chocka block full of RCR and urban gear i don't understand how some brigades can carry HAZMAT aswell as RCR epuipment on the urban trucks, and as for our new 34 if you took out the BA brackets you could fit an RCR pump there :-D, and that about covers all of your spare space.

I understand that all rear entry 34 and 24 are to be replaced before any other brigade gets a new appliances not sure if that means you will get a new 34 or a refurb job but most of the rear entry appliances are to be removed from service......

The first few 34's this year went to brigades with old vehicles but the other ten or so 34's are all going to brigades with appliances under 10yrs of age so i guess the CFS are looking at sending out a heap of refurb, 34's. Never know Robert34 you lot might  get one down there early-mid next year if your brigade pushes for one!!

I have to admit that the Burnover awnings on the new appliance are pretty good. They are stronger, thicker and give better coverage on the back. And the A/C in the crew cab there's only one thing to say about this, SWEEEEEET...... :-D

SA Firefighter General / Re: SAAS Responding Other Services..

On james' point about accidents occuring on the outer fringe of the metro area, these areas are mostly covered by MFS as well as CFS who can have a quick response and also the slower speed limits means a less serious crashes occurr more often, however outside of the metro area probably 90% of the accidents attended to by SAAS would have some kind of spillage or road hazard. Hence why i believe Fire&Rescue should be a dual response with SAAS. And on the topic of callout related funding, mundoo group brigades did approximately 240 calls last year, Victor group did perhaps 80 yet that group gets a lot more funding then ours. Our groups tried to get more funding but have been told that theres nothing more to give. Yet there's groups out there that have got thousand of dollars of equipment just lying around doing nothing because they've got nothing to do with their money. Our group has only got two sets of PBI gold and they're at my brigade, because our group can't afford to buy any more.

Apologies for going off topic :-)

SA Firefighter General / Re: SAAS Responding Other Services..
« on: December 03, 2005, 03:48:55 PM »
My point exactly. The time is, as we are always taught, of a critical nature. The fact that SAAS are willing to send their members into accident scenes without proper coverage is astounding, SAAS members aren't trained to deal with unknown or even known hazards even at a minor accident. What if there is pesticides, or drug equipment or an old unstable LPG system, or any other of the 101 things that could happen at a scene. What would it take for SAAS to change their policy? An Injury? A Death of one of their own??? :-o
Another example today: MVA Williamstown SAAS responded at 08:22 CFS called at 08:39 who unfortunatly defaulted so thats already 26minutes wasted!!

Anyone on this forum who is a trained paramedic or AO what is your opinion on this topic???

SA Firefighter General / SAAS Responding Other Services..
« on: December 02, 2005, 02:26:17 PM »
I believe this subject may have been talked about before but i believe that the time taken by SAAS to respond other services to MVA's and related calls is sometimes pathetic!! Looking at the GRN pager website the call times between SAAS and then Fire & Rescue coverage being called can sometimes go as high as 20Min's, eg: in the early hours of this morning at Paringa SAAS was responded to an MVA, it was around 10-11 Min's before Renmark SES and Paringa CFS were responded, although this accident resulted in a fatality if the PT was still alive this accounts for a lot of lost time. A second example a month or so back a car crashed at Burra as a result of a high speed chase, SAAS was responded and 22 minutes after that Rescue was called and the occupants were trapped for some time as a result of the accident.

I have spoken to some of our local volunteer AO's and they said that if the accident doesn't sound that bad or they aren't given many details then SAAS comms wont respond other resources until the info is updated or the first ambulance arrives to let them know if any one else is required.

I was told a couple years ago as a directive that fire was meant to be responded to all MVA's attended by SAAS as a safety and assistance measure for them. I mean a lot of the time Fire and or Rescue are responded within 1-4minutes which is a pretty acceptable timeframe but what about all the others that take over that time surely one day it will come down to those few minutes making a difference and we will probably be the ones in the firing line (as usual).

 Just my opinion though. :|
