SASES / Do you ever?
« on: July 02, 2008, 01:12:35 PM »
The pager website shows SES called out to a lot of, on the info on the pagers trivial events that should perhaps be taken care of by Mr and Mrs Joe public, the gutters flooding in particular comes to mind. "HELLO" clean em out, if your fit and able no excuse, if your old or infirm ,call a relative or contractor, not the emergency services at the worst possible moment!
Small tree down, get out of your slippers and "HELLO" bow saw!
Is this apparent phenomenon a suburban issue, as the rural areas seem to take care of themselves!
I know if I was called away from my employment to attend a job that the resident could have with a little effort relatively easily taken care of themselves, it wouldnt amuse me, it would probably only be the comraderie of my vollie mates, that make it worthwhile.
So do you ever feel used by a lazy uncaring public???

But they are now going to encourage OIC of incidents to be available to make statements to the media, sounds great to me . Will only take one unhappy camper to vent their spleen about the short comings of the appliances on the fireground and the apparent lack of desire by our organisation to fix issues ,or we would of had the fire contained to a single room ,but none of our new CABA operators have been issued with PBI yet so defensive firefighting was the order of the day.
Bet this initiative wont last long!

SAFECOM shared services!!! well the service standard starts with S anyway.
Our own Volunteer magazine has it gone to a yearly journal, must have missed that that email.
When is that next state election? or even a reshuffle might do it.

Sounds good Cam,but lets just make it clear it should be active firefighters who get on these committees not some group officer or retired member who has not been on a fire appliance in 10 years....

Yeh yeh thats right ,because once you become an officer of senior rank or a groupy all your brains get sucked out ,your years of experience evaporate into nothing more than unintelligeable, disjointed thoughts and your no good for anything other than sitting in a air-conditioned vehicle or base ,making dumbass decisions that will ultimately lead to the demise of the whole organisation!! :-D
Or maybe the more senior appointees are a little bit more used to divorcing themselves from being brigade centric and taking a holistic approach to the needs of the brigades/groups/state as a whole, either way you will never please everyone with a single vehicle design, but a good start would be to iron out the quality control issues before delivery.

I agree...Lately i have been reading the comments on this forum and im reading a fair bit of negativity...whether its to do with equipment appliances training or incidents it just seems people find the bad things and all they wanna do is blame some one or something...I hardly think jane McGrath blamed any one or winged about anything just got on with it and fought it..exactly what everyone should do..be happy with what we are given and be greatful at end of the day we are still volunteers and if ur un happy with things leave the organisation don ear bash people

Wholeheartedly agree with you mac13, it is a terrible shame that a young mum with so much to lve for should be taken by a awful disease. But PLEASE lets not draw any parrallels between volunteers rightly posting complaints/grievances, on this OUR site and the untimely death of Jane Mcgrath.

Fire Stations and SES Units / Re: Biggest Station?
« on: June 17, 2008, 01:13:39 PM »
Numbers, just to add to your brief overview of the updated plans for the proposed modifications to Stirling station. As I understand it ,the management commitee after reveiwing a large number of emergency organisations around the world , with mind to the village/community sensitivities of the Stirling area (see Stirling shopping center development behind the hotel) have short listed two facades that would fit in . The first design keeps the original facade in place, that is hooked up to their alerts/pager system ,in an emergency the facade lowers to the ground, allowing immediate access for responding appliances, one outstanding feature of this design is the fire pole ,once the vehicles have left the station, the facade, raises back into place, keeping the village feel of the town as per the request of the community. The design was by an American Bruce Wayne, for an emergency organisation who,s need for discretion was paramount.

The second design, my personal favorite, allows the site to be completely redeveloped by the brigade, with a large two storey residential development, complete with pool, in place of the station. This is a win/win for the service as the tenants would be paying a rent linked to CPI and an income for a ever increasing budget blowout would be generated and the development would definately be accepted by a cynical friends of Stirling action group. This design also is linked into the alerts/pager system, whereby once the "bells" drop , a entrance below the pool is exposed by the sliding of the pool into a covered housing, allowing easy egress for the selected appliances stored in a pod/racking system. Although this design sounds spaceage(Alans domain),it has been in operation in an island off the coast of America or England ,not sure which one ,for some 40 years now and hasn't failed them once. The design by once again an American, Gordon Tracy is edgy but workable, perhaps the only downside is for anyone swimming in the pool when the "bells" drop but Im sure this could be overcome.
Either way it turns out it will be a large step forward for the brigade.

To the Batcave!!! or Thunderbirds are go!!! :-D

Re strike action: It may just be my narrow take on the world ,but would you find it a quandry to be paid staff,if you were contemplating strike action ,for very real reasons  ,pay /hours when a lot of the work you do is somewhat duplicated, by volunteers, who you might feel disloyal too by asking for greater renumeration, when they get none and pay a large price, pay/family time for it .
Let me say right off that I feel that the staff of our emergency services SES,CFS are paid poorly, in a lot of cases its their love of the organisations/services that keeps them there, maybe Im completely wrong!

Another great urban myth , a standard 34 0r 24 :-D , all of the units that have been produced by the various manufacturers over the last couple of years have all been different in their construction. CFS now needs to look at all of the afore mentioned appliances, gather feedback from us the volies that have to work with the appliances, workout what features work ,what doesnt, then give a full schematic design out when tendering ,so that no matter which manufacturer quotes ,its apples for apples, with approved workable systems.
Aaahhh a dream, a Standard appliance ,with tried and tested features, quality controlled and a tied into warranty.
But wait you want more, a modular system that can accomodate RCR or HAZMAT, why yessir we can do that, because its just a matter of changing some of your side lockers to locate your new equipment as the variations to SOFC for brigades change. HEELL we will even throw in a set of Ginzu steak knives/recipricating saw to sweeten the deal

I agree with the ideal,,, but how would you cope with changes in technology ? (eg pumps, lights, rescue, etc) ? Would you wait to evaluate the new technology before changing the standard specification, which means you would always be a few years behind current technology ?

Geez bajdas, (pauses whilst looking a his feet nervously pushing dirt around) I dont want to be the one to break the news to you, ........but we are, with some exceptions, a few years behind current technology! its a not having enough money thing or something like that.
What we may need to embrace is a set time say 6 years, between design modifications so we can have some consistency in the fleet, who knows it might happen, one day soon

The clearing off the roads ahead has been a problem that has been addressed by many organisations over the years, why do we feel the need to try and reinvent the wheel every time? There are a lot of commercial devices available ,that have a proven track records, most just bolt right to your appliance ,with minimal modifications, though the one that I feel would do the job just right would take some degree of engineering to customise, but has a pedigree and track record second to none ,proven in some of the harshest conditions on earth over many years. The Browning .50 calibre would no doubt have a sound that would penetrate any road going obstacle, and if you were still oblivious to its sound, the pretty lights that the tracers rounds give off, as they tear your ride to peices would do the job. It would also have the secondary advantage of disseuding those pesky photographers that have been causing sooo much constenation recently, according to some posts. :-D or you could use a air/bullhorn as Bordy suggested.

Can anyone expand on the East Torrens group base?   Does anyone know where it is, and what?  Is it someones back shed or have they managed to get a commercial premises to move into?

The East Torrens group base will be in the Uraidla RSL hall/rooms, it is in the main street(Greenhill road) of Uraidla. As the Uraidla RSL branch had died off the premises had been left disused for a number of years and was in need of some repairs to get it up to a useable standard, as I've been told!

I personally would refuse to ride an appliance to a call that came through with only those details.

I personally would not be surprised if a unit/brigade would refuse to even respond. CFS dont have the training to deal with aggressive offenders, they dont have the experience nor the equipment. Questions would definitaley be asked if anything did happen to the crew.

Reading the posts on this forum so far the consensus would definiately be that CFS should not be asked to respond to these types of incidents. What next...snake catching?

Adelaide medic in reference to your comment about not having the equipment to deal with aggressive offenders, perhaps you havent been introduced to an axe :-D just kiddin! « on: April 25, 2008, 12:07:28 AM »
As a few people have said that they would and do wear non standard PPE that hasnt been approved by CFS . Their call or is it ? Does the officer in charge of the appliance, bare some responsibility for ensuring that "correct" PPE is worn by the crew under his direction ? Yes, it may meet or exceed CFS standards, but is it fair to put the officer in charge of the appliance / incident controller in a position ,where they could be compromised by your actions if things go tits up and its found that the non CFS approved PPE is a contributing factor !
As a Captain or Group Officer would you knowingly let your brigade/s use non standard, unapproved equipment, PBI gold it can be argued is the best possible protection against radiant heat in a bushfire ,it certainly exceeds the standard of level 1 clothing, but to use it for extended periods, could be putting yourself at risk.
The point I am trying badly to make is that, assuming that because non approved PPE/EQUIPMENT exceed a given standard, they are automatically suitable for any incident that you perceive to be, below the risk factors associated with that incident. God forbid it ever ends up in a court with some limp dic k lawyer questioning you about your qualifications in dynamic PPE risk assesment for non approved items, is it worth the heart ache?.
If its needed , go through the right channels, seek its approval, argue the case , seek clarification , dont put other people in compromising situations.

I wore a pair last night at the Wingfield dump fire, and im glad i did. Saved my socks and feet being soaked in garbage run-off. The taipan style isn't the best sealed boot.

Gilly did you wear these style boots with the blessing of your group, or is this a decision that your brigade has arrived at, or an independent action by youself.
As has been posted by others, if the unforunate happened and you hadn't been approved to wear these style of boots , it would then possibly be a protracted discussion with  the insurance guru's, not a pleasant prospect.
If your either your brigade or group approved their use ,without regions approval ,then the liabilitiy lies with them ,not a good situation.
The discussion as to the fit for use of this style of boot for CFS duty, probably needs to happen ,granted, but to assume that because they meet xyz standards ,CFS will automatically sign off on their approval for use is foolish, because once they approve their use ,they have opened up the purse strings, something they are loathe to do!!!!!!
