the new 3700 lt tankers the CFA have are a MR class and they are a little small in height and width when you have them side by side with the new 34 that CFS has...

But do the CFA carry as much gear as us? or do they carry primarily rural stuff?

i am sick of brigades being paged to a fixed alarm that i look after but they do not role an appliances but instead call up and ask the staff if its a real call...since when is a fixed alarm not a real job? time brigades looked at the SOPS and followed them, sooner or later it will be a working job and it will be there head/body in court not the CFS.......

I know of a couple of brigades around here that actually the captain responds straight to the alarm and the rest go to the truck.  I guess in a way its a good thing but in others maybe not.

But all fixed alarms in the Gambier CFS area (Except Tarpeena) are dual responsed with MFS anyway so there is always an appliance on its way.

For a 44 Appliance to work in would probaly have to be built on a HR Chassis due to weight & a 4wd one of them would probaly cost a fortune.

Cant see why you would go back to 24`s when you can have a 34 or 34P on the same cab/chassis for a similar build up price. Who wouldnt want the extra thousand litres of water?

Yeah well i dont believe it either but the number of people that keep telling me this makes ya think.  and some of these people are higher up in the group.

Gday Folks,

Have been hearing rumours about new appliances in the future will be 24's again 24P/24.

Anyone able to confirm/squash this rumour?

the only commcen in the SE was SAAS, which has never paged CFS brigades... and they closed down (as well as NW comms)so that they could centralise comms there comms in Adelaide.

Then what were those pages i used to recieve from SE Comms?  Must be aliens impersonating humans!

Medevac it has something to do with the way the alerts system is setup down here i think.

anywhere within say 5km of the city of mount gambier is classified as a mt gambier number therefore goes to the mfs rather then the cfs alerts system.

although i have seen them page brigades such as bordertown before and they are like 200km away.

And im not sure how they do it all i know is that they have stuffed a few up in there time.

This is a little off topic but

we have had numerous times where for some reason when being paged by MFS Comms the group officers have recieved the page but not the brigade..

whether there is a glitch in the system or they just forget to add the brigade im not sure but yeah can cause a delay of 10 mins easily.  Not good if someone is dying.

When SE Comms was around things were a whole lot easier.  We had local people responding local people so everyone knew what was what and where was where.

Less Confusion and quicker response times

Personally i have nothing against a young captain/lieutenent.

If the person can show they are responsible and able to take control then why not?  Yes operational experiance is an advantage but a well trained firefighter is the next best thing.  Also if no more experianced people are willing to step forward then what choice do you have?

But even though a young person may not have operational experiance there is nothing to say that he/she can not consult an older more experianced person if there is one on the truck.

In our brigade when we go to any job, we just get off the truck and do what we have to do as we have been trained...if the captain decides he wants to take a certain approach then he tells us and we follow his orders.  He is more than happy for our input even though he has been a vollie for 30 odd years i think compared to my 8.

A Captain doesnt need operational experiance but more needs a level head and able to take the pressure and keep his/her truck safe!

When i was at Bordertown we had a new station built for us.  It was tin yes but was very well laid out and comfortable to work in..  And yes i thought it looked good.  Brick does look good but when the CFS is forced to work with a small budget they need to concentrate on more important things then the look of stations.

I think its kinda sick that your wishing more call outs on your brigade....sure if your nearly at 100 then yeah then milestone would be cool but wanting your brigade to get more call outs really is weird!

But our problem is that most of the residents in our town are in their 40's-90's so if a miracle is to happen its gotta happen soon

Would that be because all the young people have brains and go somewhere decent  :-P

I totally understand why the SOP is there but really to me it needs to be a bit flexible.

For us to provide an efficient service its just not feasible to roll during the day with the required amount...

but on saying that when we get on scene its not like we are only operating with those two people only...its a group effort of (in the other days case about 10-15 people).

Maybe i havent made myself clear....we would never respond to a job e.g grass fire, scrub fire etc without the minimum of 4 people unless we knew we could get others from elsewhere on scene.  but at a job like a house fire or vehicle accident, you know its not going anywhere and if you have to short crew trucks so be it...there really is no extra risk to anyone as like i said its a group effort once on scene.

Hi All,
Camo. I fully agree that there isnt many brigades in the state that can guarente a minimum turn-out in line with SOP's (re- training levels and response times). However if i can remeber correctly you're with Compton brigade, and isnt that relativly close to a SAMFS regional command retained station with 4 vehicles (capable of turning out a crew of 4 Ba operators, am unsure as i'm not from that neck of the woods) is this not clser than 30 minutes away? Sorry my thoughts only, again am not familisr with that area.
SK

Yes you are right SK originally i did overlook the MFS as an option sorry Matt.  and in the circumstances of the house fire on tuesday they should of been rolled but werent and although it probaly wouldnt of changed the end result it still would been nice to have the extra sets of hands.

camo; i guess it depends who is requested as to who is responded... politics in adelaide? adelaide will page whomever they are requested to by the locals.
Quote
Apart from the politics of Adelaide and paging which has nothing to do with the local brigade.
brigade responses have EVERYTHING to do with the local brigade requests

Medevac if a member of the public rings up and reports a fire on millicent rd mt gambier then adelaide look up where it is a page that brigade...they dont ring someone and ask who to page.  and just incase your totally off track we are talking about MFS Comms not CFS.

i totally agree Matt.  And my view of the house fire yesterday was you should of been paged instead of Mil lel which is on the other side of town and as far as i know ...no BA operators.

And Blinkey The MFS In MT Gambier happily call us in for backup at the drop of the hat.  We have a really good relationship.  Apart from the politics of Adelaide and paging which has nothing to do with the local brigade.

who said anything about going into the house?

or any fire for that matter....

forest fire no trucks from the group respond it burns for weeks wiping out several thousand houses cos they werent allowed to respond but could of been put out in the first hour if they responded.

maybe an exageration but you get my drift surely.

yeah i can only imagine the only places where AVGAS is available would be Mt Gambier and Naracoorte.  Bordertown is meant to have some but i dont think they do anymore.

not trying to brawl or repeat my self but just answer this question for me...

Whats more useful.  A truck with two crew on it and 3000l water or a truck sitting in a station waiting until close of business so people can attend the station to go sift thru wateva is left of the house?
