SA Firefighter General / Re: Blue cats eyes instead of fire posts
« on: May 07, 2008, 04:49:40 PM »
The only issue that I have is that in a couple of cases, the blue cats eye markers have been placed where a fire plug is supposed to be, but there is no access lid to be found, or the lid is there, but the plug is a good two inches in a different direction to the lid.

Cool, thanks for the info Andrew. Thats what I thought it must before.

I think that it is slowly moving towards equality but there are two main factors that are limiting it. One being the 'boys club' mentality present in many brigades, but thankfully that seems to be slowly fading, and the nature of some women in the emergency services.

As a female firefighter in a brigade of only three females the rest males, I have noticed a boys club. However, I can say that in my brigade, women get treated the same as the guys. There are occassions though that issues have arrised and the brigade has dealt with it.

Sadly I know of too many women, across different services and pay rates, that are more than willing to play the sex card and because those in high places don't want to be seen as sexist (or have discrimination allegations leveled at them) the women are able to get away with it more often then not. They are nicknamed a 'protected species' for a reason unfortunately. The fact you have breasts and a vagina should not mean that you get treated any differently, nor should you expect it.

When I first joined the CFS, I stated, and continue to maintain, that 'Just beacuse my reproductive organs are on the inside, not the outside does not mean I can not do the same job as the males'. I will not accept being treated differently on the grounds that I am a female. I joined to work hard, train hard and HELP MY COMMUNITY!

That said, I do know women who are great with the blokes and are the same as the guys, don't give two hoots about political correctness and are just happy to get along. They realise that they are joining a male dominated arena and act as such.

Gee, numbers, you just described me there.

The only thing that I sometimes find a hindrence in the CFS, is the fact that I am exactly 5foot tall. And then I usually try to work my way around that so that I can still do tasks safely.

I am not conented with the issue raised in the above post in any way, but from what i can gather, Hiller is not CFS area any way.  All previous calls to Hiller have been MFS first off. So the question that should be asked, is why was Dalkeith responded to MFS area in the first place with out MFS going.

ALL Rescue / Re: Rescuing the rescuers.
« on: January 09, 2008, 08:09:07 PM »
In the metro area, I have seen SAAS attend going house fires. I have also seen St John first aid and SAAS to rural fires.

This is to protect by providing medical/1st aid to the volunteers attending the tasking. I understand that only a few CFS volunteers in each brigade have 'senior first aid' certificates, where all SES volunteers should have the qualification.

Is the dispatch of SAAS or St John's resources automatically done to a confirmed structural fires has part of the CFS incident upgrade process ?

What you say about SAAS attending going structure fires is true. I have been to three going structure jobs in my 20 months in the CFS, and we have had SAAS at all three. Not just for any occupant who may need it, but for us fire fighters. The last one I went to, was upgraded before arrival, and as I was in the radio room at the time, after ringing Adelaide fire to upgrade, I rang SAAS to confirm that they had been dispatched to the job for stand by.

Country Fire Service / Re: Occurrence books for all!
« on: January 01, 2008, 11:50:33 PM »
I believe these occurance books might not been intended for each individual member of the CFS, rather just a single one for appliances.  My thoughts on this is that this is a gap-bridging method to record information during the time no one is on the radio on ur Incident talkgroup.  simply because of no resource tracking occuring at Region talkgroup level.

in short terms...this highlights we're gonna be on our own in appliances sometimes, with urgent messages having to be sent on region talkgroups anyway. To my understanding this is how MFS operate anyway...with 150 being used for urgent messages during incidents and/or allocated talkgroups.

You should always endever to have someone in your radio room doing comms from the inital point of the incident to log everything that is pertinent and also to answer the phone when senior members of the brigade, ie. lieutenants, captain, or senior ff's may ring in to get an update on their way to the station. Even if that means rolling with four on the truck and leaving the fifth member back at the station, or rolling with five and leaving the sixth behind. You should always have someone there to record stuff, cause, heaven forbid, if the appliance is involved in an accident on the way to a job, you will want it loged in the station book, and who ever is at the station can organise more crew, AND respond the next appropriate brigade.

I am a Chef, Can leave for some calls, not many, people tend to get a little irate if they don't get fed.

So does that mean that prolonged incidents in your group are well catered for with great tasting food??

VHF portables are needed sometimes yes, but since you can talk right up to Divisional commander on them...using them for talk between crew members could/should be done by 40 channel UHF's.  ;)

But not all brigades use UHF Zippy. My Brigade, and others that i have worked with in my group do not use UHF, we only use GRN or VHF.

Alphaone, you must have been in a different place to me on KI     ...there were 4 ladies showers within the footy club rooms....I understand there were further showers (the semi trailer based ones) brought in part way through the deployment...

Pip

I was there on Saturday 8th to Monday 10th. at that point they still had only one female shower. and I saw HEAPS of females there.

SASES / Re: Kangaroo Fires Deployment
« on: December 18, 2007, 10:46:09 AM »
the only gripe i have with the whole deployment was that there was a huge shortage of showers and toilets for the first week. it took a week to get 2 semies of portaloos to the island and there was a whole 6 showers for the men.

Try only ONE for the females, and there was a large contientant of females over there, not only firies, but St Johns, SAAS, SES, Salvos, and I saw a couple of females from SAPOL. It was a nightmare trying to use the shower when there was 10 plus females all needing to use it at the same time- two m inute shower max. We were lined up out the door one morning.

Not bad hey, thats in CFS area. I dont see any CFS on that page. The wonders of the mfs comms!  :-D

Yes it is CFS area, its dual response between Elizabeth MFS and Dalkeith CFS. It is a regular occurance for those guys not to be responded to their own area by MFS comms.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Is there a WRONG reason to get involved?
« on: December 06, 2007, 08:23:56 PM »
I think the wrong reason to get involved is simple......no pay

K99, normally I would not reply to an antigonistic comment like that, but I am gonna make an exception here.

NO PAY is the RIGHT reason to join, it shows you are willing to help those in need cause you want to and you can, not for a filtered pay check. If the only reason you are in the emergancy services is for the pay check, then YOU are the one who has joined for the wrong reason.

Fire in Naracoorte was in one of the area's that the brigade has on its high risk area, good work by naracoorte 34 and pumper saved a couple of house's till back up arrived..I was on pumper and once other appliances where on scene we where sent back into town. This fire could have made a good run into the township or into a area that could have seen us there alot longer....around about 30ac,was lost....

Sounds like a very good safe. Job well done by all crews.

Country Fire Service / Re: CFS Funding - Council or State
« on: November 26, 2007, 02:14:49 PM »
Since I have only been in the CFS for almost two years, I cant comment on whether the CFS is better of being funded by local councils or the state. However I believe that both systems of funding would have there advantages and disadvantages. I think the biggest issue with the local council funding a brigade or multiple brigades would be how much is the local community willing to support them. Atleast under council funding, brigades would have a better chance of getting appliances that will do what they need it to do, not a one size fits all arrangement. (I dont believe that in a service like the CFS, where circumstances of brigades and groups varries greatly, that a standardised appliance system is neccissarily the best, its just more cost effective.)
