SAMFS / Re: RECRUITMENT 2011
« on: October 29, 2011, 08:55:58 AM »
Thanks MrT.... so where do the internal people get a chance at contesting a position?

Not set in concrete, has to be approved by all parties first.
And given it is different to the way Comms has 'always been' then it may take time to get it approved. Union will be the first one that will have something to say im sure

Couldnt see the Union letting it happen. Comms is a nice place for people with long term injuries to go.

It has happened before when CFS OCO's moved over to Adel Fire CommCen

If Adelaide Fire took all operational calls regards vehicle movement, how many extra paid $$$ staff would the UFU be after in MFS ComCen....goodbye budget for anything else.

As well, you would loose local knowledge to manage the incident scene and resources.

SASES / Flood review in SA
« on: October 24, 2011, 05:39:38 PM »
Will be interesting if this review changes anything. Article started in front page of today's Advertiser http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/weather/taskforce-slams-south-australias-flood-prevention-strategies/comments-e6frecil-1226174631412

Most of the comments from readers were about new developments being allowed at Buckland Park and nearby areas. Also about lack of maintenance in the RIverland flood levy's

18:52:28   17-10-11   MAWSON INFO: SACAD LAUNCH RESCHEDULED FOR 28/11/11. OPERATIONAL BULLETIN RE SACAD TO ISSUE SHORTLY.GO. - CFS Mawson Group

No suprise really, and as pumprescue said, closest most appropriate has been thrown out the window purely by the way they have decided to run the system. Although i doubt thats why it is delayed.

Some will change for the better. If task is beyond 30 mins drive from SES Unit, job to the nearest fire response.

I am wondering why after learning how CAD will run radio wise why we will need to bother opening the station at all, seems a waste of time and resources. They should have just done what CFA did and take all station radios out except for group bases.

OK, so if you take station radios out...for the larger incidents who will do logistics, incident control, planning, crew welfare, paper-war, sitreps to Group Region State, AIIMS, etc, etc....I doubt if you informed Adelaide Fire of a Sitrep they would inform Group immediately. They will record info that might flow to CRIMMSON for review later...but will that help you on the incident ground ?

Personal opinion, volunteers are going to need to review processes so they know when to open the Base for incident control. Then the Base can let Adelaide Fire know of sitreps and leave you to control the incident.

Alarms and small single incident responses, yes let Adelaide Fire do the recording.

Larger incidents you might need help in Incident management. But they wont have local knowledge that is needed in larger incident management.

Not sure if that Incident Management should come from a group base or each brigade..that will be up to the volunteers.

It will be interesting during the first storm or multi-incident event occurs how this will work when services will still be operating two different systems.

SES SHQ have issued a summary document that should be distributed to all volunteers explaining the major changes by SACAD. It will be interesting to see the four (4) status updates being communicated for each Incident to Adelaide Fire.

By the looks of it, all of the Adelaide Uni Road Accident Research paging has ceased to exist.

You would hope with a CAD database now active, they would get more accurate historical data they can manipulate, than from pager messages.

Unless the pager messages were for a different purpose than historical data.

Many volunteers were not happy with a centralised organisation (FESA) for many years.

It will be interesting to watch the changes and how they handle the large distance, for the more remote from Perth, volunteers.

I am sure many in this state will be interested in how they re-organise to learn from the experience.

Yes Pip i would think that MFS could hand some retained MFS area back places such as Kapunda, Moonta, maybe Tanunda etc.

And yes there would still need to be a boundary between MFS CFS but it seems to be working well between concordia CFS Roseworty CFS gawler river CFS and Gawler MFS.  This is yours and this is mine type set up.

So your saying Moonta should be covered by Kadina CFS??? There was a caravan fire in Moonta Bay on Tuesday night where if Moonta MFS was not there, there would have been 5 caravans burnt to the ground instead of only half of one. think it should stay the way it is and slightly adjust some boundries, better to have too many responding than not enough, even if some brigades are getting hundreds of stop calls a year.

Hmmmmm, according to http://www.fire-brigade.asn.au/Station_Display.asp?Service_Code=SAMFS&Station_Code=68

72 responses for 2009/10, 54 for 2008/09, etc, etc

Good use of a pumper and grassfire 14 !!!!..

I admit, I am biased against MFS rural stations equipment when the resource could be used elsewhere in the state (eg pumper in another location).

For personal curiosity, saw a page requesting volunteers to support a display to raise funds for the CFS Foundation on the paging website.

What is the CFS Foundation and what does the fund raised go to ?

I have not heard of the entity before....thanks.

Directly beside and facing the MFS stand with SAPOL & SAAS them. Each person on the CFS stand seems to be wearing a T-Shirt with "not just a fire service..." on the back. Some SES volunteers had a photo taken with Smokey...

Some general details on http://www.sascan.net.au/?page=infPages/ambStJohnFreq

From 'SA-Scan Yahoo Group' listed some possible frequencies in a posting dated 15th August.

I would suggest join the group to view the posting

Could affect the 'business as usual' scenario, but you still need the extra coverage to provide the surge capacity.

I personally hope that some equipment and resources will always be extra for the large incidents.

It will be interesting for the stats to be applied by SAAS and MFS management to justify decisions in enterprise agreement discussions and to the government.

Could it reinforce changes to SFEC ?

The main interest is that the community risk is covered by trained & equipped resources...I am too old to worry about turf wars between emergency services sectors.

If the stats display an community requires a resource regularly (eg RCR) and it is 50km away, then I hope a change occurs. Even if it involves moving the equipment from one Unit/Brigade/Station to another location closer to the Community needing the resource

A MAN has been charged with stealing from a Victorian Country Fire Authority station and volunteers' cars while they attended a fatal car crash.

The Pearcedale volunteers spent the night at the crash scene after Sunday's accident in Somerville and returned to find the station and their cars had been broken into, with an estimated $4000 worth of tools stolen.

Police charged a 27-year-old Pearcedale man over the incident.

He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on October 27.

Country Fire Service / Adelaide Hills newspaper article
« on: August 19, 2011, 01:04:28 AM »
Three things interested me on this article & I have some questions

1/ Is the dead trees more prominent ? Are they only worried about near access roads or properties ?

It is good that both opinions (for & against) on the amount of dead trees are listed in the article.

2/ Interesting that people complain about the 4 to 5 metres clearance when CFS website http://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/site/bushfire/news/native_vegetation_management/new_rules_for_native_vegetation.jsp details up to 20m from a building and up to 5m from a structure.

3/ The fire summit is mentioned, but the AFAC 2011 summit is in Sydney according to http://www.afac2011.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=70. Does anyone know what summit this is ?

Adelaide Hills councils clear dying trees ahead of fire season

Source: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/deadly-problem-for-hils-dwellers/story-e6frea6u-1226116955114

AUTHORITIES in the Adelaide Hills are waging a winter war on overgrown trees ahead of the bushfire season.

Hills mayor Bill Spragg said the number of dead trees had risen 200-300 per cent higher than usual and the council had begun the huge task of clearing fuel loads.

He said there were more dead trees in his council now than in the 30 years he had lived in the area.

"I have not seen the levels of dead wood reach this extent before, it is going to be an issue, they appear to be dying all throughout the Hills," he said. "They are all dying because of the drought two years ago, they have succumbed to the stress and have never recovered."

The council has begun slashing "substantial" numbers of the trees and vegetation, and clearing up fire tracks in preparation for the potentially dangerous season ahead. He said between 60 and 70 per cent of trees in the Cherryville area, near Montacute, were dead.

Some Hills residents, however, feel the council has gone overboard.

"I have never seen the clearance levels so severe, they will always throw the bushfire threat in our faces but some of the trees they are hacking, like my radiata pines do not grow back," a Crafers resident said.

He said some vegetation had been cut back 4-5m from houses and every other day there were traffic delays as workers hacked into trees.

Arborist Marcus Lodge, of Arborman Tree Solutions, agreed vegetation in the Hills was "thick" but disagreed that dead tree levels were at an all-time high.

"There are areas in the Hills where some of the trees are dying off in patches, and that can look quite bad, but I do not know if the number has actually increased," he said.

Country Fire Service manager operation services Rob Sandford said Hills homeowners should start their fire preparation now.

"While it is too early to predict spring growth and the subsequent severity of the upcoming fire danger season, the CFS always recommends that people use the winter and early spring months to prepare their home from the risk of bushfire," he said.

"It is good practice to start preparing your bushfire survival plan now, well ahead of any fire danger, as you must make important decisions about what you will do in the event of a bushfire, before the fire season starts."

Adelaide next week hosts a national fire safety summit to identify the dangers of the upcoming fire season.
