SA Firefighter General / Courier Extract 22/2/06
« on: February 23, 2006, 12:40:38 PM »
An extract from the Courier 22/2/06. I believe there was a little more to the article, but it is not on the Couriers website.

Quote
CFS chief blasts ‘abuse’ of volunteers

A senior CFS leader in the Hills has lashed out at the excessive bureaucracy in the organisation and claims the State Government is treating volunteers like “unpaid public servants”.
Mt Lofty Group Officer Rod Cooper said the government and its CFS bureaucracy were “putting dollars and cents ahead of public safety” which in turn was sapping morale and making long-serving members leave the organisation.
Mr Cooper – a CFS volunteer for 27 years, with more than 10 of those years at group leadership level – said he put in between 20 and 25 volunteer hours a week to keep up with all the paperwork.
“We’re happy with the checks and balances on an operational basis,” he said.
“What we’re not happy with is the bureaucratic interference that
is affecting the morale of volunteers.
“The workload on senior volunteers is really unrealistic.”
Mt Lofty Group, which encompasses eight brigades including Stirling, Aldgate and Bridgewater, attends more than 1100 call-outs a year.
Mr Cooper has called for more “direct support”, such as paid administrative staff, to handle the paperwork the government has demanded.
“If they’re wanting us to do all this paperwork, they should pay
someone to do it,” he said.

Country Fire Service / portable radios
« on: February 21, 2006, 12:16:40 PM »
Just a thought:

How many brigades had Motorola VHF portables before the introduction of GRN and VHF narrow band?

Did you ever wonder why they didnt opt to stay with that particular model of radio. It would have halved the number of chargers out there, as they use the same battery........ put a bit of heatshrink on the antenna and they are easily identifiable as VHF....

Country Fire Service / Hospital Theatres - Fixed Alarms
« on: February 03, 2006, 06:48:36 PM »
Is anyone aware of any processes in place for fixed alarms (false alarms) that may occur in a Hospital theatre?
Considerations have to be given to the fact that it is a sterile area...... and firefighters arnt sterile (generally)!

Have some thoughts, but not enough time to chat about them at the moment.....

Thoughts?

Country Fire Service / Bushfire/Wildfire
« on: February 03, 2006, 12:11:11 PM »
isnt it amazing how these things work.....
-we started by having bushfires.
-the word bushfire was deemed not to encompass all we do so Wildfire came in...
-now everything is being refered to as a Bushfire again.

Bushfire information messages for instance..... for grass fires. Exactly why they introduced the term Wildfire!

dont get me wrong... always thought the Wildfire thing was to 'americanistic' for my liking.....

just thinking out loud, thats all....

« on: January 12, 2006, 10:24:38 AM »
I note with great intrest lately, the call for the 'small chasis' based 14/QAVs..... been quite a few incidents where the canters just wouldnt fit.

Hopefully it makes state see the light... as well as the merit behind these nifty little units!....

SA Firefighter General / Ammusing pager message.
« on: December 15, 2005, 09:37:15 AM »
I forgot to copy the message before i refreshed the GRN pager site, but...

Did anyone else see the message: Respond Animal Rescue.... Koala stuck in tree (in back yard)

I had to read it a couple of times, and am still chuckling about the implications. If it was stuck on a road I could understand the concern..... but in a tree!!!! lol

CFS Cadet Corner / Disaster Training
« on: November 24, 2005, 06:12:04 AM »
Tommorow our cadets are taking part in a (local) major disaster exercise.

This exercise was designed by the local St Johns cadet leader, so that some of their crew could earn their achievement badges, whilst highlighting and encouraging the interaction that occurs between all services.

All crews will be shadowed by senior members to offer advice where needed, as this is thier first real exposure to this kind of thing.

Im looking forward to seeing how things go.... Should be quite interesting.

Will post some outcomes later.

Hope all those who have partaken in the flooding over the last couple of days get to dry out soon.

As they say these things always happen when its dark, cold, wet and windy.... without fail.

I hope the good people at the Brewery get the Xmas display fixed up in time for the season kickoff......

ALL Rescue / Vehicle Setup
« on: October 13, 2005, 07:39:10 AM »
Just out of intrest,

Is there anyone out there who doesnt have their RCR setup on the passenger side of the vehicle?

I cant think of any that I have seen so far that arnt setup in this manner.

I know SES get to design their own cabinates for this discipline, But not sure how much input CFS allow.

For those that have been involved, what sort of ideas have their been about layout when commissioning?

All Equipment discussion / Helmets
« on: August 23, 2005, 05:34:31 PM »
Our equipment officer is very stubbourn when it comes to ordering equipment. It must be on his "approved by state" list, and preferably unless there is a upcry from the group, the cheapest.

What are peoples thoughts on the various types of structural helmet out there???

Personally I think Pacific's are nasty, for reasons im not going into at the moment.... but scott aspen (getting a little cheaper and nastier) and the Cairns 660 ( a little heavy)I dont think are to bad.....

SA Firefighter General / Combining the services
« on: August 11, 2005, 11:32:11 AM »
Rather than changing the topic in another thread AGAIN ;)

Why bother about having any of these services retained?

why not have the "place name" emergency service. 1 title that covers everything we do - dealing with emergencies!. It doesnt implicate we only deal with fires, or 'state wide' emergencies......

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons.

The word filter appears to be playing up at this point in time. Should you post any messages while this problem is being rectified, please double check them in the thread to ensure no mis-interpretations can be made.

All Equipment discussion / Harnesses for BA masks
« on: July 19, 2005, 10:00:57 AM »
The CFB BA sets use quite a nice 2 point head harness. What are people thoughts about these harnesses?

Secondly, who supplys them?
Is there anything in the standards saying we shouldnt be using them?

The only problem i could forsee is with the cloth section of the harness still being damp (turning to steam) with quick operator changes.....

On a side issue, do you think we'll ever change to Carbon Fibre Cylinders in the forseeable future (soooo light!)... It reminded me of when we changed from steelies to fibreglass wrapped..... lol

If your interested in how other states work then this might be a useful place to go, maybe inspire some ideas to be discussed here!.....

The site seems to be in its infantcy though.

SA Firefighter General / Training and Assessment
« on: June 06, 2005, 08:26:45 AM »
I had the opportunity to partake in a pilot course on the weekend....

The general Idea of the course was that there will be no requirement to do the assessment on that day. IE - do the training; then.... if you don't think your ready for the assessments, do them later when you are ready; or decide its not really for you and don't do it at all.....

I reckon the idea has some merit, but it has the potential to leave things a little open ended as such....

What are other peoples thoughts???

Country Fire Service / Elect or Appoint
« on: May 23, 2005, 05:01:34 PM »
Our last group meeting reported that the service is invesatigating was of improving the rank structure.

What are peoples thoughts on election of officers versus appointment???

Each choice has its pro's and its con's. Having been exposed to both methods of structuring a service i cant say i really like either... but hey, thats life!!

Country Fire Service / The Fire Ban sign
« on: April 29, 2005, 08:11:49 AM »
Maybe its just because they were busy yesterday....... But as I mentioned in a different thread, I didnt notice the Fire Ban sign on the freeway open yesterday.

Was driving past this morning and was greeted with "Total Fire Ban Today"..... I thought - wow, maybe i missed something in the forcast!!! A quick check of the CFS website confirmed - definately not today....

Hopefully it doesnt happen too often, or people will start to ignore it like any other road sign, if they dont already.....

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens
« on: April 10, 2005, 12:56:12 AM »
1: How many brigades are still using fire sirens?

I know we still have it connected to fixed alarms, for major daytime incidents and sounding fire ban days. As well as weekly testing...

2: What are peoples thoughts on the phasing out of these sirens?

Are they simply an annoyance to the community or is it a good way of letting people know somethings happening....

Peoples thoughts?

Place test posts here / just a thought....
« on: March 14, 2005, 04:11:31 PM »
The forums been a little slow over the last couple of days, so i thought id post a question......

Which do you pefer: skittles or M&Ms????

The debate has been going in our area for a while now (had nothing better to do at the time). We were discussing what extras we could put in the rat packs, when this arose as a side issue!!!!

Its not really on any particular topic so test posts looked good!
