Country Fire Service / Helmet rank markings - use the uniform guide!!
« on: April 08, 2005, 12:35:57 AM »
I can't speak for why one of the Stirling seniors had  the wrong stripe as I don't know... However, I didn't even know the Captain and Seniors stripes were different, I though the only difference was that the captain had a yellow helmet...  We just cut out a strip of reflective tape and stick it on...

But on a different note, I notice that some brigades (I know Burnside do) have stickers on the helmets saying what training they have. (ie, A green cross for First Aid, and “RCR” or “HAZ”)... I think this is a good idea... is this a standard? or just something they do by choice?

Country Fire Service / Wearing of PPE, or lack of it !!
« on: April 08, 2005, 12:18:20 AM »
I'm suprised that they feel safe fighting fires with no ppe... I get warm enough from radiant heat even with full ppe... Same with Safety Tabards.... I don't feel safe walking around on roads (especially the SE freeway) without having a nice shiny reflective vest on.... :?

Country Fire Service / New or Old Logo
« on: March 30, 2005, 10:27:15 PM »
I also like the old logo better, although I'm not saying changing was a bad thing... If they had replaced it with a logo that also had meaning and was nicer (Sorry to the designer) I would be happier...

MM ok i went i dont care... at risk of being unpopular or whatever i believe its not what Flag or Symbol you march under but why you do it that counts... Though i have to say if the uniform was hot pink instead of yellow i may feel a tad silly wearing it to incidents  :)

Again no offense, but did that remind anyone else of the SES? I know its not hot pink, but close enough  ...

Hows this for a funny fire cause:
This guy was living in a shed, which he had done up into a bedroom (basically had TV and and stereo, bed and couch, plus a few bedroom extras...) 8)
He was trying to watch a DVD, but his dvd player wasn't working... so he grabs a can of some something (probably RJ-45, or WD-40) and starts to hit the DVD player... the can ruptures, and fills the room with a flammable mist... he turns the light on, and the room flashes over...
Ever thought that by trying to bash some sense into DVD player you might lose your shed?
(BTW, no injuries, and the shed was fully insured)

Country Fire Service / Operation Easter Brake
« on: March 25, 2005, 02:10:04 PM »
On thursday 24th March, The Stirling CFS took part in "Operation Easter Brake", a Road crash Rescue simulation that was put on for yr12 students from Heathfiled High school, Pembroke School, and Oakbank Area school...
It was basically a bad crash scenario - head on with drunk driver, Fatality and critically injured persons...
The excersise allows Students to see what happens in a crash, from the fist arriving Ambos, to Rescue and Fire trucks, Traffic Police, Major Crash, Rescue51 helicopter and intensive care paramedics....
I think its a good thing for students to what happens at a crash, but don't know if it will affect thier driving...
Do any other brigades do an excercise like this?

Why should the CFS change it's procedures to please the MFS when we're doing them a favour with Change of Quarter? I don't mind doing it, but come's down to my previous agruments about two fire services in one state with two different SOPS. Maybe a happy medium should be reached with such issue of appliance call signs, comms procedures, etc.

MFS have to do the same for us when they come into our area... it goes both ways...
But I agree, there should be a standard....

The CFS only allows a certain number of Trained personell per brigade... (ie, no more than a certain number of BA, RCR, HAZMAT, etc)
Or brigade has been trying to get more BA people trained, but have been told that there are already too many active members trained in BA (I think we have around 12)

SA Firefighter General / Map of Mt Osmond Fire
« on: March 10, 2005, 10:37:32 AM »
I was looking at the map of the Wangary fire here: http://www.cfs.org.au/about/pdf/WangaryFire_13012005_media_topo.pdf
And I started wondering if anyone knows of a similar map of the mount osmond fire... It would be interesting to see the spread of brigades here, and compare it to over there...
I know we have many more resources close by here, but it would be nice to see it graphically...
Cheers

Country Fire Service / How do you see the service in the future
« on: March 09, 2005, 10:11:45 PM »
I agree... I'm all for it... I mean, like we always so, as soon as it saves one life, its worth it...
Any idea how many trucks they had a Mt Osmond by Late afternoon? I get the impression that if the other fire hadn't been controlled Jan 11th may have been a different story for the hills...

I was referring to duel brigade responses - Having to respond 2 brigades to fixed alarms etc. Also the compulsery 2nd Alarm to fires on Fire ban days... I don't know when they were brought in, but I assume its a contributing facter to rising call out numbers...
(Is that a state wide SOP, or a Mt lofty group thing??)

Your right... I didn't go to Sydney or Vic... And when I stop to think about it, most members aren't fit enough, especially for the steep alpine fires in Victoria...

That is good... It shouldn't be too hard for CFSHQ to tie something like that into their resource tracking programs...[/i]

Country Fire Service / CFS as a paid service
« on: March 07, 2005, 10:41:05 PM »
Another option is for shops to offer discounts to vollies... I know Mt Barker Subway gives discounts to CFS, SAAS and police... and there is a shop in Crafers that started to give discounts after the Mt Osmond fire...
If the Local businesses started to get behind the CFS, not only would it be much appreciated, but it may raise public awareness about what we do...

SA Firefighter General / CFS Station numbers
« on: March 07, 2005, 10:33:43 PM »
All CFS Brigades need a number (or at least their trucks do) so that in the event of a change of quarters to Mets area, we can go through their comms (as of SOP) and they don't have to do any more work... There is no other reason to have them... (as far as I can see)

Does anyone have a list of what numbers go to which brigades?

Yeah.. we already have to look closely at new recruits, especially younger ones, since CFS can be done as a school subject

I think the CFS should be given more credit for what it does... there are brigades out there doing 300+ calls a year, and in my opinion, once a brigade is attending that many incidents, its not fair for the govenment to expect that commitment for free...
With the new duel response SOP's the number of call outs will increase for a lot of brigades, and although I'm not in favour of MFS taking over, something needs to be done...

I agree that there should be a minimum fitness requirement, but really, who in their right mind would want to go on a taskforce when they aren't fit enough... I know I wouldn't...

The media doesn't give much credit to the CFS as it is... its not suprising that they ignore the presence of women there as well...

Just out of curiosity.... The main spirit in the CFS is the volunteer spirit...
However, what if the government decided that it would start paying CFS volunteers (per call, for example)?  I've heard some people say that they would leave if the CFS was made a paid service, as they joined to volunteer...
Would you still be happy?  :?:  This is a just a hypothetical question... I want to know peoples thoughts...
:dontknow:
