Hi there Robert34

I do agree if we could guarantee mobile phone sms's being 100% instantaneous -  it would have saved the organization millions as majority of people carry them.

Blinky - SMS.

I have done a little homework into this (as we considered it), the problem you have is there is no guarantee you will get it on time.

If you use SMS you will notice some times there is huge delays usually because of overloading (to many people sending messages - usually peak times)

I do like the idea, as long as we could guarantee 100% timely displays - I always carry a phone but not a pager.

Toast

I am also in this position some times - we reside approx 1.5km from town and if we have any variance (wind & rain (only some times) we also don't always hear the siren.

Many thanks for all the comments - Sirens wins

I am a siren person as well - and I guilty - I some times forget to carry the pager.

just a question for the forum:

I have been a member with a Urban CFS brigade area where we never had a siren at the Fire Station - just pagers for alerts.  I now reside within a rural area where the siren is well respected and it brings the community alive when sounding (especially during the summer)

We have pagers as well - but its amazing when on a rare occasion we miss our weekly siren testing and the community asks why?

My question to the forum is: since the introduction of pagers a few years back could we be loosing this community alert/notification - as I have seen allot of the newer stations loose there sirens or not use them as they have pagers?

I am after peoples views & ideas.

Many thanks

hi there

Well I would like to add my two bobs worth.  I am from a small rural brigade and durring the summer both vehicles are usually out the door within 5-10 minutes.

On the other hand durring the winter it has a tendacy to be longer - as alot of our rural members dont always carry there pagers (as they see any major fire risk)

Hi there

MY VIEWS OF THE CONFERENCE:

I will admit I went to the conference with uncertainty but can back think we as a group achieve heaps.  In saying this - take into consideration Rome wasn't built overnight.

The organization listened & documented all points raised - with the end result to try and streamline/improve the organization for the future - some have probably heard this before but I feel confident.

PS Blinky CFS VFBA promotions have taken pictures (pip).

Excellent effort.

Blinky

Thanks for asking - What i do know all agencies have been asked to put a proposal together as the up and comming expansion is huge - being all emergency services agencies.

Some organisation have deliberately let rumors slip hoping to cause a stir as Roxby will become a huge town within the future of SA - and I believe it will become a powerplay within the political sector.

There is no land that has been allocated (know for a fact)we have enough trouble housing the existing workforce.

Just to clarify the above - its not a rumor but BHP is like any other large organisation they are asking external agencies of what emergency response capabilities they are able to provide with the looming expansion planned.

I hope this set some minds at ease - as for Roxby I honestly believe I will NOT see MFS in Roxby Downs within the next 5 years (this is my view only as I think the costs with far out weigh the current need - but politics work in funny ways)

As I have said in previous post there is alot of other areas within SA which currently have MFS and shouldn't and others whom have CFS brigades and shouldn't (for those whom have been around will know whom & what I am talking about.

Thanks

Hi there all

Well I can confirm BHP Emergency Services have three sets of Holmatro Gear (two sets on the surface and a set Underground) - and they do back up the town Volunteer Emergency Services when required or asked (in Ambulace - Fire & Rescue).

Hi there Mike.

I Didnt mean to jump the gun - but I get frustrated when people put untruths on these sorts of web sites, the service is going through a very rough trot with the inquest to EP fires etc we dont need to fight amoungs ourselfs.

Getting back to travelling costs , this it could be a brigade/group whom have said they were not paying travel costs for a number of reasons.

These sorts of volunteer summitt are important to the service and we need people to have there say as long as its there believes - as Blinky has commented proir in this post.

For those whom are going see you there.

All the best

Hi there

Just want to clarify - the above post is not correct.

Regarding travelling to volunteer summitt - YES they are paying for travelling in the normal CFS way - being a figure for the amount of KM travelled.

So please disregard the above post.

Thanks

Hi there all

Well I know for fact, its noted in the old act when the town was formed - when the township population reached 10,000 there is provisions for MFS.

Well in response to the above - the population was meant to reach this figure 5 years ago but never (current population less less then 5000)

this agreement was with WMC - but its now owned by BHP.

CFS in Roxby is struggling with numbers - but what a waste of my tax dollars. I honestly believe there is other area within the Adelaide areas which should be considered more higher on the listings for MFS stations.

But I have been working in Roxby for over 16 years and I will believe it when I see it.

Hi there

I can confirm - There has been a committee formed and is investigating the possibilities of a Fire Museum based in SA.

The committee is made up of 4 people from CFS volunteer, I am on this committee

Again I stress it only early days - but I can confirm there has been some vehicles which have been earmarked and saved from being sold at auction. (A pumper, old rear mounted Hi no & and old F Truck - and others)   Allot of vehicles have already been sold but we now have the full support of CFS HQ and the VFBA.

First thing is to look for storage facilities for the appliances until a building has been sort (vehicles been stored in many places).  I would again like to stress its early days but things are starting to happen.

If you want to have any input please just PM me and it will be tabled at meetings.  We hope to have a small spread in the following Volunteer as we have missed the current run.

Many thanks

Hi there

The Wilmington Hills are very steep in places.

One appliance from a strike team - seen it as I drove by they were a little hesitant in driving it out due to the angle - believed they used a dozzer?

PS it was not this appliance pictured - I will try and find some pictures.

Thanks

Hi there

It was highlighted at the recent Wilmington Fires - the small landcruiser-Landrover based QAV's are invaluable.

In our sort of terrain we rely heavily on the smaller units - especially the private/farmers vehicles.

I would like to propose a trial of building some drop in units for traytops (with all the safety spec's built in).  I know there is allot of negativity to-wards private units within this forum but we all have different terrains & areas (and we rely heavily on them)

I also realize there is allot of issues related to insurance etc - etc - etc.

Its just a suggestion - throw the cat in with the pigions, as we don't have the luxury of having an abundance of vehicles.

Thanks

Wayne
