Even though i've got a pager i always rely on my scanners to give me the heads up about emergencies before getting called out

SA Firefighter General / Re: Vic Bushfire Inquiry - Sirens
« on: May 25, 2009, 02:30:54 PM »
The Kalangadoo brigade's station siren is used for alerting the community during day time hours about an emergency underway in the local area but to also inform brigade members who may have missed the initial pager call that more crew is required especially if there isnt a driver

As for alerting the town about an approaching fire it can be used for this purpose as well especially in the event of a mains supply failure due to the siren having a backup battery affixed to it

SA Firefighter General / Vic Bushfire Inquiry - Sirens
« on: May 18, 2009, 10:17:43 AM »
Fire sirens always have been used here in Region 5 by brigades who still have them as they give the community notification that an emergency is occuring somewhere... during black saturday the power did fail hence why the sirens couldnt be sounded however simple backup battery attached to the station siren could have been useful

Alerts would be used as the backup system if paging went down

Bearing in mind Zippy not every brigade in the state has Alerts although bringing back the good ol fire phone system wouldnt be such a bad idea

SA Firefighter General / Re: Becoming a Firefighter
« on: May 09, 2009, 03:20:37 PM »
1. Apply for a seasonal fire fighter position (when they open up)

This is done by applying online with Locher Recruitment and filling out an online application form

2. Attend a interview/medical at Locher Recruitment Office in Adelaide

3. Attend a physical pack hike and be able to carry a 11 kg backpack over a distance of 3.2 kms in under 30 mins

Not wanting to put you off gasman but most of the SA Fire Fighter members on this site including myself who have made it to stage 3 crashed and burned cause of it being a very competitive position to get into

OK back to the topic at hand

As you indicated your in either Year 11 or 12 and doing IT.

I remember reading somewhere that people who are 18 will be required to undertake 6 months of national service with 3 months being basic physical and army training and the second 3 months where the person gets to select training of their own choice these being fire fighting, first aid or communications

Besides the short term work with Parks SA and SA water which is rather competitive and even some hardened SA fire fighter struggle to make the cut

This is true as i made it to the DEH pack hike but didnt make the cut cause the allocated time limit is very specific

But the question on everybodys lips is............can you use it, as a bottle opener!

Thats a good question Jaff if you look closely at the pic it has a special curve which can be used to shut off gas lines so without a doubt that same curve could be used to open bottles up

If you go to www.tft.com and look around the site they will have an extensive description of this piece of equipment available

New police stations across South Australia, supported by a record level of funding for SAPOL and the highest ever numbers of police officers in the State’s history, are all concrete evidence of this Government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the community,” Minister Wright said.

Kalangadoo is getting a new police station built but not sure when though

OFF Topic / Storm Chasers Final Episode Next Wednesday Night
« on: March 04, 2009, 08:09:51 PM »
For all of those who have been watching Storm Chasers on Austar or Foxtel the final episode is next Wednesday night due to it being the final day of chase season

Tonights episode was pretty good and hair raising when Josh and the DOW lost radio contact with the scout and TIV for a short period of time due to the teams being caught in the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraught)but missing out on intercepting a tornado cause of no radio contact with the DOW

Next week is building up to be exciting according to the episode preview cause not only does the scout, probe and TIV team get caught in the path of a twister but Reed's team also does too  :-D

Is anyone else watching it
