Country Fire Service / Re: CFS Facebook page
« on: July 05, 2010, 05:15:31 PM »
Someone has started a CFS Facebook page.  It has been around for some time now.  Also Region 2 have their own page, along with several other Brigades.

So, I may have this wrong but - this will effect those "volunteers" out there who receive an "honorarium"? I won't be devastated if someone being paid $2000 a year to compile and distribute 4 sets of minutes is taxed on it.

*insert thumbs up* LIKE!

Again, just cos Joe Blow your Brigade Officer says you did it right, wont hold up in OHS court.....

If you read the letter correctly it says that a CFS Career Staff Member will be conducting the validation.

I've done the course.  Very informative and gives an in sight not only to FIP's but the actual booster system itself.  The course includes an onsite walk thru of a premises with those facilities.  CFS got a demo FIP for each Region. RTO's can provide the training.

Reading the infralog it seems there should be more than the one tone available as message tone?

My pager doesnt give you the option to chaneg the tone... onyl lets you choose between beep or vibrate options?

Is anyone elses differant?

The ones I have seen are the same Alex.  They only have beep or vibrate.  Althought the beep tones can be set different, like four quick beeps, one long beep repeated.  Albeit, they are only beeps not really different tones.

CFS 'Heroes of the bush' photo takes out national competition

Thursday, 13 May 2010

A photograph capturing the spirit of emergency service volunteering, taken by young South Australian Tim Eckert has been awarded the Secondary School Category National Winner of the 2010 National Emergency Management Volunteers Photographic Competition Awards, following a special ceremony at the High Court of Australia in Canberra on Monday.

The photograph, titled 'The heroes of the bush', encapsulates Country Fire Service (CFS) volunteer firefighters recovering after having fought a 3,000 acre bushfire near Meningie that started following hundreds of lightning strikes and involved over 100 CFS volunteers. It was taken by Tim at 11:30pm on News Years Eve 2009.

Tim and his family live near Meningie, close to Lake Alexandrina in the State's upper south east. It is an area facing bushfire risk and the photograph captures the essence of community and team work during emergencies.

South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission Chief Executive, David Place, says he took great pride in presenting fellow South Australian Tim with his national award at the ceremony, which also marked the beginning of National Volunteer Week.

"It was fitting that this special event, recognising emergency service volunteering, marked the commencement of National Volunteer Week. Our emergency service volunteers are a vital resource and competitions such as this allow the community to capture, share and recognise the good work they do.

"Tim truly is a deserving winner; his photograph captured the capacity and commitment of the CFS volunteers involved with the incident.

"It also depicted how very grateful Tim and his community were for the work performed by our CFS volunteers that night. Entering the photograph in the national competition was Tim's way to say thank you," said Mr Place.

Tim, who attends Meningie Area School, said he was excited and honoured to have won the national category for secondary school students.

"Actually I was travelling to Clare in the Mid North that night with my parents when we got a call about the fire on our family property back at Meningie," said the 16-year-old Year 11 student.

"Dad and I returned home, only to find the fire had been contained by the local CFS. As I had my camera with me I pulled it out and took the picture of the firefighters and their trucks just after the event.

"It wasn't until some time later my photography teacher at school saw the photo from that night and mentioned I should enter it in the competition.

"Having nothing to lose I did so and was pretty surprised to be told I was in the final field, let alone find out in due course I had won the national competition.

"We appreciated the CFS doing such a good job, so hopefully the fact the photo featured them provides further recognition."

Fellow South Australian Yvonne Hill, a long standing member of the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron, was also awarded a National Highly Commended Award within the Individual Category for her photograph capturing the Squadron performing a rescue exercise off West Beach in Adelaide.

The Squadron is a member of Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) in South Australia, a valued member of the emergency services sector.

In its third year, the National Emergency Management Volunteers Photographic Competition Awards are an initiative of the Attorney-General's Department, supported by state and territory governments, with prizes sponsored by Harvey Norman.

The awards are presented to photographers who aptly capture an image depicting the capability and commitment of emergency service volunteers in Australia and fitting with the Competition theme 'Emergency Management Volunteers - Thank you'.

Further details about the 2010 National Emergency Management Volunteers Photographic Competition Awards can be found on the Emergency Management Australia website at www.ema.gov.au.

From what i have heard the Apollo pagers are here to stay, the current pagers have been deemed too expensive to get repaired and parts are becoming harder to find. so unfortunately if you send a pager back to be repaired, dont be surprised if you get an Apollo pager in its place.

It's more the fact they can buy them in smaller lots.

No idea, ha ha ha.  Just remember that from the Samsung pager rollout/training days.  I suppose it's like when you have your pager near a computer or other electrical device you get interferance and corruption. I guess the second pager would act like an electrical device too. :?

Are you physically running the pagers side by side? If so this will not help the sensitivity of either pager but cause more corruption.

I received a pile of Apollo's today.  Asthetically, not pleasing.  Haven't had a chance to do anything else with them yet......

....Henley on Albert boat races.....

Just curious....what is this event?...like the Todd River dry boat race event in Alice Springs....if so, sounds like a great idea with the organisers thinking outside of the square to get around a issue.

Got it in 1.  And yes....the issue is still there!!  :x

Norton Summit had 34P @ the Marble Hill Ruin for the Aussie Day Celebrations (Citizenship Ceremonies, Aust Day Awards, Ruin open day).  Not an actual parade - Static display

Meningie did the same.  Citizenship awards,  Aussie Day fun run Marshalls and Henley on Albert boat races.  More so showing the colours really.

SES in my town were struggling for a while, with local CFS and SES members meeting with an outcome of dual response, to RCR's. I don't like to use the words SES to close down, or the CFS pushing them out but all were in agreeance at local level.  However, when put thru the chain of command there was no way one of the services would sign off.  It has happened now but it seems silly that two agencies in one town have duplicated equipment. I thought this is what SAFECOM were all about.  Hence to say, one of the services mentioned chooses what jobs they respond to!

just remember that the govt is into equal opportunity, anti-cronoism, and transparency. I can't say for certain that it was or was not in vacancies SA

It was sent to Regional Offices for distribution to who they think may be appropriate for the position.

but seriously......thats most likely cos its not a real medal....not part of the Australian Honours and Awards Scheme.

More like the Year of the Volunteer medals everyone got a cpl years ago....

Ribbon bars were issued with the IYV medal and the info on wearing the new CFS medal talks about a ribbon bar for the CFS medal so not sure why they weren't issued with the medal???

No ribbon bars issued with medals.  Let's spend a heap of money and only do half the job!
