Country Fire Service / How do you see the service in the future
« on: February 24, 2005, 10:15:46 AM »
Change is an enevitable thing. Not always liked, but, as evolution dictates serves a purpose. As I mentioned in a previous thead, the merging of services would be a great (if not fantastic) plan.

Like me, for some it would be a welcome change, reduce doubling of resources and tensions between people trying to achive the same thing(i wouldnt have to carry 2 pagers either!) Unfortunately others see change as a very scary thing and will oppose it at all costs. (maybe those that stand to lose the most).

i can imagine a combination of paid/volunter staff running stations with the level of administration stuff to do these days. Paid to run the joint, but others can still do the work.

Either way we can only hope that there is at least some consultation of the volunteers before all the grand master plans are made and thrust upon us.

It will be an interesting time ahead, hopefully something to look forward to....

That probably had a lot to do with it..... they (AFC) were cutting a few corners by then..... but, that was the past. Much rather look forward to the future!

At least one of the early 24P's caught on fire that I know of...... Not sure what the inital trigger of the fire was, but the result of the wiring looms through the work deck not being fused was a truck out of action for a couple of months.

Apparently all the wires were the same colour tooo..... try tracing that out when you want to replace something!!!!

Airlocks with the foam induction system are common, but when they work, ive been pretty impressed. The system was never designed to take AFFF, but the spike is a little concerning. The need to educate people about leaving an empty drum on and not over filling the reservoir!

I agree that the electric water level sensors are a pain.... they still seen to attract growths in the tank.... you have to pull the sensors out every few months to clean the crud off them....

Despite the teething problems they have proven to be a reasonable appliance (although I pity the brigades that ended up with 60m underslung sidelines - so much for the little clearance they had!) a fairly sturdy workhorse all round.....

CFS Cadet Corner / what is going on with cadets?
« on: February 21, 2005, 06:14:14 AM »
I could be wrong.... but the last i heard the brigade had the option of delaying the transition to a firie????? A good thing if maturity is of concern.

Anyways,

Having started at my brigade as a cadet, it has been interesting to see all the different rules and regs come through. Its come full circle since then, and im now also assisting in training the cadets.

The thing that most disapoints the cadets in our area is that they have joined to learn how to fight a fire, but thanks to the very few who dont put their brain into gear before acting, are now told fire (and almost everything else) is  "out of bounds"

Kind of defeats the purpose for them really.

As the future of the service, we should be giving them controlled exposure to what we do. It keeps them interested, and by the time they become firefighters, are well prepared to do the job......

There is a place.... we just need to sort out where that place should be....!

Cheers,

SAMFS / MFS numbers in country towns

There really should be no question about combining all 3 services under 1 flag. It removes the doubling up of resources for a start.

And as for picking and choosing what calls..... Theres nothing saying just because you join a RCR brigade that you MUST do RCR! Thats a rediculous statement. (refering to Volly brigades only)

Im sure you know as well as i do that some people arnt cut out for some jobs, but are quite capable at others.....

Ive had the pleasure of working with all 3 services at many diferent incidents. The thing you need to remember the job for us all is (and the CFS mission statment sums it up perfectly!) to protect Life, Property and the environment.

We're all there for the same thing, and anyone wanting to make something of a grudge needs a kick up the proverbial.

Thats my 2cents anyways......

SA Firefighter General / CFS Station numbers
« on: February 20, 2005, 10:53:43 PM »
Ok..... Its all well and good for the Mets to use a numbering system.... but at the same time they dont have as many stations to account for.

At least with the current system you know who your dealing with, without having to think about it. Consider all the appliances you could be dealing with at a large incident and trying to decipher who your talking to....

Its a practice that could be learnt, but the present system is simple, self explainatory, and works for the majority.
