yes...thats a point about the centre of gravity. But our present tanker is similar in chas height as 34.

Oh who knows. Any way it was a thought.

The funny think is, I have offered the Pt Elliot 34 to the Group to make use of as a tanker . We have a poor excuse for a tanker in the Group and thought that the 34 cab / chas would be a good move. Strip it down and put the old tanker tank on it...It will certainly handle it ok + it will be 4x4.
Then was told that 4x4 tankers are now not permitted. Now that dont make any sense. I wonder why?

Funny you should bring up the T-Cards 5271. We tasked for 3 days to the Riverland and filled out 5 T-Cards all up.

We only have 4 regular drivers. We currently have a 24 and 34 appliance. We have asked for 34 the be replaced with a 14 landcruiser. If this happens then we will be a little better off...Still need to make sure the drivers are suitable to use it though.

90% of our incidents are North of here. As soon as we leave the station, it is a 20 minute driver up hill.
The Landcruiser will drop that time to 4 minutes up the hill

A mobile kitchen sounds good.. If each task force has 30+ members at each location, surely the kitchen is an option..

I wonder how much it costs CFS everytime we call The Salvo's to supply meals at the staging areas.
And that kitchen is only ever based at staging.

hey firey, If lightening struck the tree we were under we would not have noticed....We were in a deep sleep :-D

Hi People.
 My name is Allan.
I have been a member for 27 yrs. I joined the EFS mid 1979. Joined because my Father, Uncle and Grandfather were also members.

I am at present the Captain of the Port Elliot brigade. Over the years I have held every position in the brigade at sometime or another.

I am the last original member of the original CFS Group (Mundoo Group - formally Goolwa & Districts Group) still holding a position in the Group. Have held a position in the group ever since it was formed in 1987. (Equipment Officer for 17 yrs & Logistics for 5 yrs.)

When I joined we had a Blitz truck and a trailer pump. We progressed to a c-1300 International and a D-1410 international in the early 80's. We eventually obtained a 24 & 34 hino which are the current appliances being used.

My 1st fire was at Deep Creek in Dec 1979. I have been involved in nearly every major tasking including both Ash Wednesdays in 1980 & 83.
I have no plans to retire from the brigade or group, nor do I plan on any ranking above captain.

My Grandfather was the person who decided to encourage Port Elliot to form a registered Fire Service. He, at that time was a fire supervisor for the district.
We formed in 1958, but the town had a trailer pump before that date. The trailer pump was purchased in 1948 from the Civil Defence in Keswick.

Hope I have not bored you.

We (Port Elliot) have a web page. We try to use it to give current info about activities, incidents.

Probably time to look at upgrading the web layout. Love looking at other CFS web pages...Some have good ideas for layouts etc

Country Fire Service / Re: Mopping Up

We mop up using the hose reels and layflat hose. We mark an area and dont leave it till we as sure it is done. Aint going back again.

We did the night shift at Onk gorge recently. We turn all the lights off and let the hotspots tell us where they are.Use a hand torch for locating those pesky obsticles. Also use a torch to find the smokers.
Seems to work ok

Well done with Who established it. That was Mr F.L.Kerr.
I am not sure where the 1st training centre was.
I am looking for the Year.

Clue: F.L.Kerr retired in 1979 so it must be before that date.

Oh, dont get me wrong, I love to task. I would never say no.
But lets look after the hundreds of volleys that do go on these taskings.

And yes, we do somehow turn a bad task into a great time with all the funny stories and crap jokes that members tell us.

And most of all, i have made some great new friends everytime I go.

Being rung at 11 at night to be told to organise crews to task at 4 in the morning.(Boy, do I make friends ha ha)

To be told that we must sit and wait ( no smoke in sight)

To get up at 4 in the morning and Travel for 4 hrs to find out that there was no Time for breakfast when you got to the staging area because you are told to rush to a certain sector to then just sit and wait for 6 hrs and do nothing.

And when you do go and work extremely hard for half the day to find that there has been no food organised or to find that when food arrives it is sandwiches put in a foam box to find that the contents of the sandwiches have bled thru the bread. What about using an esky with some cool blocks in it.

To find that you must leave your appliance park on roadways over night to find equipment missing or tampered with the next day after you sleep.

To find that half the task force must sleep in one town and the other half must travel another 45km's to sleep.(What happens if you have to task somewhere quickly during the night.)
I believe that a task force should all be at least in the same town or area when sleeping etc

To find that when they do eventually supply food on the fire ground, that nobody remembers to bring out ice for cooling drinks.

I believe that each task force should be supplied with a local farmer or someone who has good knowledge of local terrain, fire tracks, roads etc ( At least for the first day of each task force entering the district)

We go on Task Forces all over the State & Interstate.
What are the problems we have when Tasking.
Is it the food or lack of it.
Is it the sitting around all day.
Is it the long hours.
Is it the Lack of Infomation.
Is it the extremely short notice to Task to an incident.
Is it the sleeping arrangements.
Is it leaving your appliance behind at the incident for others to use.
Is it being told to crew an appliance other than your own when your unit is also there.
Is it going to an unfamiliar area and no local rep is assigned to your task force to assist your team in arriving. Telling you about all the hidden obsticles that only a local will know about.
Or anything at all.

OK, lets get started

74
Yes. I agree. And it seems to be getting worse. Just got back from Waikerie. Deployed for Port Elliot at 3am. Arrived 7.30am. Sent to fire ground and sat under a tree till 4pm. Got 1st feed at 4.45pm and used 500 litres of water for the day. 10 litre was for washing hands to eat. Day 2 deployed 7.30 am and sat under tree till 6pm. Returned to Waikerie by 7.30pm. 500 lites water used for complete deployement
