SA Firefighter General / Re: Word filter
« on: March 23, 2006, 11:30:24 AM »
In another thread questions have been raised about the word filter. If you have any questions about the sites policy please refer to the user guidelines thread and the user agreement.

From day one this site has had a no swearing policy and this will remain. We will not debate this issue. Any user circumventing the word filter is at risk of having their account disabled.

One of the principles of this sites operation is a safe and welcoming place for all types of people, that is why we have this policy.

Thanks for reading. :-D

yeah yeah I understand the principle and it's your website so you can do what you like, I just wish you could have Australianised the filter first.

yeah loosen the noose, firefrog!

i don't think crafers chook shop is closed down, it looked pretty open the other day. it does have weird open times though. for some reason i think theres one weekday where its not open at all.

good chicken though, yeah we got some heavily discounted stuff for a first aid course at the station. i think we've gotten food there on the way back from a strike team as well.

P F, just wear a CFS shirt, theres enough lighter wielding psychos out there already!

the sign on the window said it was for sale and it was all locked up but according to the opening times on the door it should have been open.

you don't need the t-shirt, I just ask for CFS discount and get it.

as far as food in the hills you can't go past 2 places [...] and the crafers chicken shop (good food AND you get a discount if you prove you're in the CFS!

it seems to have closed down, was shut with a sign on the door last friday when I went there anywhere!

PS why the hell is "h-e-1-1" a banned word? are we all assumed to be yanks with their weird ideas of "bad" words?

Sorry people, my bad.
The COSO's and SOP's used to be on the CFS website. I used to download and print them for the latest up to date material. Not sure why they aren't on the site any more. Would definately clear up some of the myths we talk about here

indeed, you can still click on "About Us" on the main page (ignore the annoying popup menus) and it's listed there but is a dead link.

Here instead is the copy I saved from Nov 2004 (4Mb): http://www.sacfs.org/publications/COSO_SOP_Nov2004.pdf

yeah, its to do with weight, not tech.

(hopefully you guys aren't drivers)
You should take the advice given to "PF" to read the COSO/SOP.  Hint: both weight of the vehicle and whether it has ABS are factors, so a 24/34 type appliance with no ABS is limited to 20km/hr over the limit.

At the end of the day most CFS personal are NOT regular or professional drivers of 10-15t trucks at high speed under UDD conditions or even get any comprehensive training.

yes I was surprised I could get my MR licence and then (legally, apart from self imposed brigade rules) zoom around with lights and sirens breaking the speed limit with no training on "response" driving (not to mention off-road truck driving training).

I was under the impression, that if STATE and more so REGION is at code red, that group bases are meant to be manned for the taking of alerts..

Any one that can elaborate ?

That's great if you actually have people that can man/woman the station during the day. Not sure about the COSO's and SOP's, appears the link on the CFS website is broken. Will have to check at station.

if you find out somewhere where it says that, can you let me know please?

i thought I had already seen a directive about wearing seatbelts on appliances. all new vehicles come plastered with stickers stating "Seatbelts must be worn"......

it already states in a SOP/COSO that seatbelts must be worn (even though we are exempt under the road traffic act from wearing them), however I suspect the previous guy was right that there will be a renewed emphasis on it.

Code red is level of prepardness.. eg...  How many staff are in the SOCC centre, *group bases being manned * all that kind of stuff.. MEans the conditions are bad..

from where do you get that group bases are to be manned?
(not saying you're wrong, would just like to read the SOP/COSO that says that)

Incident Operations / Re: New Fixed Alarm System
« on: March 01, 2006, 12:13:35 PM »
oh ok. and are all brigades gonna be getting this or is it only in some regions/ groups? i'm in lofty group and for a group in a fair dangerous area we always seem to be one of the last groups to get anything. Dunno why but we probably won't see it for a loooooooong time yet.

it will be coming (in Lofty group at Aldgate, Stirling and Bridgewater) in the not too distant future, this year sometime.

Lofty group people actually did most of the development of this new GPRS-based system, handed it to HQ where it stalled for a while then HQ started a "trial" of it which didn't include Lofty group.  There is various political crap going on.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: radio operator training materials?
« on: February 27, 2006, 09:07:24 PM »
can anyone point me to any training materials for new station (or group base) radio operators? (apart from that contained in BFF1)
ta.

For comparison, if you want a copy of the SES Training manuals, let me know. I can convert them to PDF & email direct.

I understand they will be different because SES have 'private call' & 'radio paging' features, which I am not sure if CFS installed.

The SES talkgroup allocation are still under review, so that will be changing sometime in the future.

thanks for the offer (really) but I'm not sure how much use it will be, from my understanding the SES don't have such a thing as base/station radio operators, it's all from SHQ?
(what's your email address? can you post the pdf to something like a "files" section of this website somehow?)

There is a whole GRN training package - radios (base, mobile and portable) and also pager!

Try the Brigade TO if no luck the Group TO or Group GRN instructors failing that the Region should have the resources.

As for comms training - listening to the radio chatter it sounds like radio procedures and protocols are required at all levels.

Out.

you talking about the GRN course?  the one everyone is supposed to do before using a radio?

cos I've done that and while interesting is not what I'm after.  Am after training on how to be a base/station radio operator.  They can go do the GRN course for sure but that would be another adjunct to the training.

if you're talking about another course to that one, got any more details?

There are instruction manuals for all radios and pagers. your group GRN instructors should have access to them.....

I've got them but I'm not talking about which button to press, more about procedures and general training in how to be a base/station radio operator.

That pretty much sums up the the article, but Rod gives a few examples including
*Having to rent the command cars from state fleet, which makes them more expensive, and they're not replaced as often (I think they used to replace the command cars every 2 years, and the cost was the depreciation of the cars, about $2,500. Now they are rented, they group pays ~$7000 a year (Anyone correct me if I'm wrong))
*Having a milage limit on command cars
*brigades having to buy goods like stationary and computers from government chosen organizations rather than supporting local businesses
*Having to wear different types of PPE to different jobs (eg. Having to take both Nomex and PBI Gold to a grassfire)

He also said volunteers should have more input before decisions are made for us.

The minister for Emergency services Carmen Zollo Said she had spoken with our CEO and everything was cool.

I believe the changeover was quite a bit less than $2500 (every 2-3 yrs) and now it's quite a bit more than $7000 per year but don't know the exact figures.

The Courier article continued on a fair bit more than that, but only what was on the front page is on their website.  I will attempt to scan the rest and post it as the quote at the end attributed to the minister is quite interesting.  I read it to mean groups can still buy locally and are not forced to use govt suppliers.

they're not duplicates but I don't know why SHQ (say) can't send a page
to all the region maildrops then oncall staff specifically if they want.

The chimney thing might have been a chimney fire, people dont have fires going in the middle of summer.

but how would the chimney fire have started if the fire place wasnt lit.... but yeh they do around that area... friken cold some times even in summer.

much as I hate to inject some facts into all the speculation...

one reason for having a fire in summer is some people have a
range to provide hot water.

But in this case it is a heritage listed, vacant, locked up
cottage (technically owned by SA Water).  The interior could
have been on fire and the chimney the only place for the smoke
to escape.  Local residents rang the local captain who rang MFS
and requested the turnout.
