Title: What is underneath your PBI?
Post by: Scania_1 on October 25, 2006, 08:25:13 PM
Just wondering what CFS is saying you must wear under your PBI? We (MFS) have been told we have to wear a minimum of a t-shirt and long pants underneath the gear to preserve its integrity and protection. So why do we need long pants and not long sleeves? Personally I would think that the construction and fabrics of the PBI would be adequate to protect your body with nothing on underneath, apart from your underwear made out of natural fibres of course. Makes sense to obviouly not wear any polyester etc fabrics underneath.

In BFF1 we got advised to basicly do the same. Throught winter i tried to always have a thick wollen jumper mainly for warmth under proban.
Members of my brigade say you have to waere something to protect from steam burns.

The PBI has a moisture barrier which is *meant* to reduce the possibility of steam / heat conducting related burns..

From what I heard not long ago was that PBI Gold, unlike Proban etc. met the correct standards for protection without anything underneath!

I believe there may of been trials by SAMFS for a "shorts" like garment to be worn underneath the overpants and the usual t-shirt under the coat, but I don't know what the outcomes of this trial were.

IN the US the firefighters wear shorts on underneath their PBI.  Always see pictures and video's of F/F's around the station in shorts and t-shirt.

Do the Retained MFS have to wear a uniform when on a job ie "Fire And Rescue" t shirts underneath tier PBI or is it just what you turn up to the station in?

From what I have seen in various parts of the state - what ever they arrive at the station in!!!!!!!

Much like CFS - how many of us get changed before attending the station?

I dont get changed usually before attending the station as a must do but if I have time or if Ive been exercising Ill chuck on a CFS t shirt, usually I wear my Fire and Recue shirts anyway during the day so 70% of the time IM wearing CFS gear already.

Having done the CFB course i would recommend where possible to wear Long Pants & long shirt under your PBI.

Yes it is hot stuff to wear but radiant heat still travels through the PBI quite easily....especially when it is hard against your skin e.g. squatting down.

Also if you wear long pants you have another set of protection if your PBI rides up a bit leaving your ankles exposed.
