Title: CFS website
Post by: ksj on November 07, 2006, 08:15:01 AM
Hi All,

CFS Public Affairs has been working on a new website with a different look and enhanced capabilities for the last few months.

A design was circulated earlier in the year to various stakeholders including government agencies, volunteers and the community for consultation.

Using the feedback received through that process and based on research from our existing site, the following design has been developed.

The website will require a minimal number of clicks to obtain information and will provide information from CRIIMSON as part of a 'current incident table'.

The banner (which currently says join today) will be used to support different campaigns/messages to the community whether they be promotional (i.e. during the fire danger season or national volunteer week etc) or more general messages such as the recruiting banner currently in place.

The primary focus is on the provision of public information. However one stage of the website's development involves the creation of a sealed area for volunteers to access information.

The website has been developed in accordance with guidelines set down by the SA Government and will be launched at the beginning of December.

In the live website, the large image of the volunteer will rotate through a selection of CFS images, and the smaller images under fire prevention and current incidents are only there as examples at this stage, and will be adjusted. We have been conscious to ensure that the website will be quick to load allowing for those users on dial up.

Please take this opportunity to provide comment on this new design, particularly if you believe there are significant deficiencies.

Feel free to email me directly at stjohn.krista@cfs.org.au

Comments are required by Friday 10 November.

Warm regards

Krista St John
A/Manager Public Affairs

yeah seconded. I think the CFS has been long behind the eight ball with not having up to the minute current incidents as per the CFA/RFS/others websites.  Please make sure you test it works with firefox Krista!

Yes, please do... If the web developers are unable to code in standards compliant code, (ie, works in browsers other than Internet Explorer), then they aren't worth hiring! :)

Looks great! If I was being really picky, I'd say the heading section is too big, (the "SA Country Fire Service" title), but that is just nitpicking...

im relatively sure the incident page will be kept up to date by CRIIMSON... the online system CFS is currently using for incident logging, resource tracking, sitreps, etc...

would probably be linked, but not show logs, resources, etc

Hi there,

Thanks for the comments so far.

Just to give some info re a couple of them.

The incident table will have information from CRIIMSON and will refresh every couple of minutes. It will provide a general indication of activity outlining time of call, location of incident, what type of incident and the status of the incident.

Darius, I've been advised that the site should work just fine with firefox.

The site will be up in early December, so you've got a few more sleeps to go yet Tillerman.  :-)

Smiles

I cant see the Proper (old, crusty) CFS Logo anywhere on it...only the Taxi Logo

Which in my opinion is a good thing, but others always seem to beg to differ

A couple of suggestions Krista, will there be a members login section, and the CFS STAR logo would look better on the top left next to the main heading

I agree that it does look a bit busy,ie crowded.

I think the quick links should be incorporated in the links section as it is doubling up and congesting the Home page

Cheers :-D

Brenton Ragless joins VFBA Staff

The VFBA are delighted to announce that Brenton Ragless will soon join the Association staff as a project officer.

Brenton is well known to Volunteers as "the voice" of the CFS having held the position of CFS Media Liaison Officer for the past five years. However, he has decided to pursue other lifetime goals and areas of career development.

He will assist in the areas of VFBA promotion and  fundraising and will take on the role of "webmaster' for the Association website.

Brenton will be starting two part time positions as of Monday 13 November with the Department of Defence (DSTO) and with the VFBA

However, in conjunction with these two positions Brenton will also be pursuing other professional interests, particularly in the areas of corporate MC work, workshop facilitation, creative writing, special event management and audiovisual production. He hopes to remain available for CFS as needed.

Brenton has followed a long line of family tradition in the Country Fire Service having been around CFS trucks since he was 5 years old.

They're probably really busy again though, which makes me think perhaps some more staff in public affairs is in order?

You really think the public affairs people would be making the website themselves?  More likely to be delays in the website development company they've hired...

Good to see that CFS Public affairs have kept there promise of having the new site up & running by Dec 2006!

What only 6 months late , typical Govt spin to keep everyone happy.

That whole department cant even produce the Vol Mag on time. Let me guess that will be out in Dec 2007 promise!
