SA Firefighter General / Re: Is there a WRONG reason to get involved?
« on: December 07, 2007, 06:51:57 AM »
Wrong reason... hmm

I can think of 3 people from our brigade who joined soley because they were there to pick up/keep an eye on their other half. I can't say i agree with this reasoning, neither can i say any of these 3 contribute when said other half isnt there. It seems to me like a rather faulty reason to get involved in anything.

That being said I joined because a friend of the family didn't think I could knuckle down and dedicate myself to soemthing. I fell a bit in love with the work and haven't left!

okay so maybe there priorities are wrong, and well if they dont do and lot well there not exaclty some one you would really want in your 'team'. so i would consider that A wrong reason. (but that could get into a heated discusion, probley best to leave it there)

Hmm,  dont think is a matter of having the skills or ability... but the desire to get the skill and build on the ability.

Remember, people may not be suited to every task we do, but they are still useful...

As for the wrong reason... well there can be.... but they need to be investigated properly...

well said, but you dont want to have the people on a appliance who is just an extra butt on the seat if they dont want to help, you want them to want to be there and to learn and help. even if it is something that is not as important, because its all helping the community!

sounds nice, looks good.

i was down at the airport the other night, and the Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting appliance was flashing lights out the front of the pick up area.
anyway i was standing back looking at the appliance, and its like heaps odd. do they have a pump on the appliance?
does anyone know much about them? i suppose they would have more crash aircraft rescue stuff right??

just curious! if anyone knows anything about it.

i joined, because i love helping the community!
i might live in a small country town, we might have a small brigade, and dont do a lot of taskings, but everything we do is for the community like any emergency service!! people dont have to say thanks, the look on their faces says it all!

its the best feeling, when your working great locals, and doing something for the community!
they support us in other ways, like fundraising etc. and its just great to see the support go both ways!

not only that, but im getting life experience and skills, and its all in my spare time!

there you go shows how much National SES Week has bee promoted in this state.
Thats alright though when I asked the local council if we could put on a display to a)celebrate SES week & b)to distribute how to prepare for storms & flash flooding stuff, they nice girl at the council didn't know that was part of our responsibility. In fact she didn't know we are the lead agency for stuff like that at all & we have to get a official permit! Sometimes I wish I had joined the guys in yellow instead, at least people know what they do :-D

its never to late to join!  :-D

you know wat i think i speak on behalf of most people when i say this...

in the small country towns, we dont volunteer in emerency servieces for the glory. we volunteer because its our community its the community that we have
1 grown up in,
2 know everybody
3 we care about others
4 if we volunteer to help those in need, we then know that in times that we need help others will be there.

anyone else want to add anything go for it, but i think you are right, this thread has been done before, and we shouldnt have to justify why we want to volunteer our time to help.

Yeah, and I want to know the Barametric pressure and what the tide will be doing..

Barametric pressure will be up or down and the tide will be in/out or dodge.    :-D :-D :-D
he he okay, considering wat weather today and using averages the barametric pressure will be round 760 mark, and the tide, should be coming in (in theory) but hey anyone can prove me wrong on that, as i do live in the country not on the beach. and still going with wat i said b4 16, wind and cloud at 1500hrs.
not being a smarty pants just using knowledge. coz apparently i have that.  :? LOL

well i spose time will come to those in need.
but you know wat i like about this. this conversation shows, that even though these brigades might not have the best station, they are still in it to help the community. i admire people in those little country towns, coz they stick together and help others in need. and thats wat volunteering is about.   :-D
