Hypotheticals / Re: Schools
« on: March 05, 2007, 03:24:36 PM »
Do any brigades (and I'm talking more country ones here) actually sit with the schools in their area and organise some sort of plan.
Although schools do have duty of care with students, what if there are students with intellectual disabilities who require special assistance?
And are brigades aware of what sort of supplies schools have that may be possible HAZMATS? It is possible for schools running Science/Art programs to have materials in a large number (think of a class of 30 kids where each one needs resources).

Was reading an earlier thread about Fitness levels in the CFS
Has the fitness, or lack thereof ever been an issue for crews?
Has there, or does anyone ever foresee there being a minimum fitness requirement for volunteers?
If we are talkin about OHS&W how does sending someone not capable of aerobic exertion into an emergency situation sound?

I was wondering why I saw a fire king with a wood chipper hooked up to the back of it the other day Camo?
I wonder if the Fire Kings have to do Burnover training?

Hmmm, OH&S, we're in an occupation (yes I know, volunteers technically not, but ya get the point) that involves very very hot conditions, and very very wet conditions, and hey think sliding down a pole is dangerous. Although, I do know a not so nice story of someone climbing a flag pole at my school on muck up night and someone squirted him with detergent and he slid down, not gonna tell ya the ending, but needless to say, he gave off a "piercing" yell.

But flag pole is a bit different to fire pole tho...

Hopefully!

Imagine the ancient romans trying to send a text message, "that sounds grVIII" or see you at the skVIII park" maybe thats why they didnt text back then!!

I reckon people picked up the name, cos your prett much actin like a hooligan to use it and get into a structure.
Imagine how poor old Mr Halligan feels with all these fire fighters playing with his tool everyday?

CFS Cadet Corner / Duty of Care
« on: March 04, 2007, 10:31:11 PM »
As cadets are "minors"
What sort of duty of care is laid onto the brigade, and has this affected any brigade members from taking on this role?

Obviously in a school setting, after school sport is outside of hours so parents assume duty of care, is this the same situation?

CFS Cadet Corner / Recruiting
« on: March 04, 2007, 10:27:18 PM »
Howdy, this is a continuation of a question I asked in a different group,
just wondering what sort of programs are run for cadets and how are they recruited?
As far as I have seen, it tends to be kids of current CFS members who are mostly cadets?
probably wrong but ya get the idea...

any of you young ones got any suggestions on how you and your mates could be better targeted?

well, its lucky that I live on a long street, that just happens to be near a primary school
always good place to get things moving.
Teachers are just fantastic at appropriating change...

(and i'm not just saying that cos I'm a chalky...)

Not only important to recruit big people, its also important to get cadets who are keen to go on and become full members.
Only being new to CFS, what sort of programs are run for cadets and how are they recruited?
As far as I have seen, it tends to be kids of current CFS members who are mostly cadets?
probably wrong but ya get the idea...

Country Fire Service / Re: Why did we join the CFS?
« on: March 04, 2007, 10:08:42 PM »
getting the thread back to why we joined
I was on holidays and football had just finished, so being a teacher I naturally had a whole stack of spare time
decided I wanted to join a volunteer group, and spoke to someone who knew same area i was from before i moved, randomly discussed things and they said they were in the CFS and I should come and give it a go, nearly chickened out on the first night, being scared about meeting scary fire fighters, and dont think ive missed a training since.
Have made a great bunch of mates (even though some of them don't know that a deck of playing cards is the same viewed upside down  ) and really enjoy the feeling of helping out...

« on: March 04, 2007, 10:03:15 PM »
It's nice if GO's rock up and bring Maccas in the middle of the night!
Pity if your in the brigade that has just rocked up on site and then has to look at the wrappers for the next 8 hours, with the prospects of more coming nil...

hehe

Any ideas on where to get an "Appropriate Form" to tell them to do their job ??
Maybe I will set up a company and get government/local council/concerned individuals, to come out and clear their hydrants and make sure their house can be put out if its on fire

Hey, that ideas copywrite, hands off...

LOL  :-D

Country Fire Service / Re: voting rights
« on: March 02, 2007, 06:10:39 PM »
I believe there is some sort of official policy as to turnout and training requirements to allow voting status. If anyone knows would be great if they could post. This is an interesting topic, and one that is being talked about due to the "old brigade" feel at a friends brigade. Even though their election is still 15 months off...

« on: March 02, 2007, 04:49:22 PM »
haha, you've certainly got some good come backs hick,
dont get me wrong, saving lives is definitely not a game to me,
maybe I just watch too much House (sarcastic doctor series on Channel Ten for those less fortunate who don't know what i'm talking about...) and think that everything can be summed up with a nice little reference to something totally unrelated, say, cucumbers for example...

As for your comment about volunteers being paid, then yes you are correct, and they do become staff.
As for running off and joining mets instead, no, because not always practical because some places would only have cfs, and therefore those unlucky volunteers don't have the option.

as for professor footy, can't say i have done a doctorate at university or whatever you need to become a professor, only honours sorry...

sorry if i offended, was not intention of mine to get you angry, just trying to add my opinion to an open forum, and help people see a topic from different points of view.

it is great to hear others opinions and if i cop some flack from ppl for now every now and then, for every person to abuse me, there is probably 2 or 3 sitting back thinking, well,  hadnt thought about it from that perspective before...
