All Equipment discussion / Re: Tanker vs BWC
« on: July 12, 2006, 01:27:47 PM »
However it seems different groups are doing things differently - Heysen call their tanker 'Heysen BWC 12' but Mount lofty call their tanker 'Mount Lofty Tanker'.

not officially they don't, it's just the writing on the side of it hasn't been changed yet.
It makes me laugh though when you say on the radio to SHQ: "Mt Lofty BWC responding ...." and they reply: "...Mt Lofty tanker..."

Is there a directive somewhere that states what is correct?

BWC apparently.

I am after peoples views & ideas.

we only activate the siren for a fire in our area (and weekly testing).  It is really for notifying the community (since having pagers), but as you mention, people take notice of it (semi-rural area in the hills).

Don't Think The General Public Could Tell Any Difference, And Do You Really Want To Wear BA For That?  It Was A Show Of What We Can Do, Thats Why Alot Of Things Were Not Done As Per SOP.  It Might Take Too Long For People With BA & Gas Suits To Get Out Of The Truck.  Remember I Don't Think Burnside Roll With Hazmat Already Dressed Standing In The Back Of The Truck.  It Was Funny To Watch The DVD Afterwards & Look At What Would Have Been Done If It Was A Real Iccident.

you're a big fan of capital letters aren't you...
PS. where do you get the DVD from?

doesn't this cost a substantial amount of money to get in to? the amount of around $175 was brought up with these comps at a meeting.

it says $2500 on the website.  So apparently people can't just turn up and watch...

Does anyone email fire reports to CFS HQ :?

is the email [email protected] :?

I can't help you whether the "cfshq" part is correct or not, but "@org.au" is missing the domain.  Maybe it's just a typo and you mean "@cfs.org.au", otherwise that could be the problem...

Not fitting down driveways means better education for the public.... like "if the truck doesnt fit... we cant put your fire out! here is how big the truck is......"

maybe CFS should put something about the size of the trucks in their next advertising campaign?

that's a good point, how many brigades do that?  We have driven around to some places in our area with the 24 truck and shown the residents that just having a gate wide enough is not enough.  Eg. overhanging tree branches, no turn-around space, if you had a fire on that side of your house, we'd be driving over your garden beds here etc.

On the couple of occasions we have done it, it was quite an eye-opener for the residents.  I don't think many people appreciate the size of the trucks (especially height).

Darius, it seems my ideas and conceptions of bridgewater do, in fact, suck. my broup car bay was the bus bay on the end. Yeah so from what you've said, good station, bad for group base.

however, thats probably the best station for group base in lofty isn't it? Stirling would be alright, but they're busier than bridgey and have more limited parking than bridgewater too. a mighty dilemma! :?

yeah well there is no real alternative, that's the problem.  Stirling is not really gonna work, and neither is at the new Aldgate station (when that happens!).  There was talk (a long time ago) of using the ambo station back towards Aldgate near the bus depot for the group base, cos the ambos were going to move closer to the freeway, but that never happened.

the best option at the moment (IMO) is to expand at Bridgewater out the side a bit.

As i said, the ERS 7 Is only for the officers...

By the fire phone system, I assue you *dont* mean ALERTS and mean the ERS 7 system?

ERS7 hasn't existed for the last couple of years - according to telstra.  In reality the last brigades will be off it soon now.

makes a good group base. 3 bays for trucks, group car bays,Radio rooms, offices, kitchens, BA room, large meeting room with all the toys, huge PPE storage area that could also probably fit another truck if need be.
we also used to have a little transport bus thing for transporting replacment crews, but im not sure if we still have that. Either way, I reckon this would be great for a super busy urban station.

it's fine for a station but way too small for the group base + station.  There is no inside parking for the group cars (what car bays are you referring to?), 1 radio room (combined base radio room and bridgewater station radio room), 1 kitchen (which is fine) and a very small group base office area.  The small bus is still there, it is what gets shifted out the way for large incidents and that bay has temporary tables and phones etc go in for the IMT.

I'm the oldest of the officers in our brigade at 26, the older people in our brigade with experience didn't want to be very involved with the brigade operationally so the younger people had to step up.

it seems to usually be the other way around with younger members struggling to get the chance to take on more responsibility as older members hog everything.

Heard Bradbury and other Brigades have gone back to petrol engine pumps, was wondering the reason for it?

Bradbury didn't ask for it!

The only issue i have with the VFBA is that it is funded by the C.F.S so why would it want to bite the hand that feeds it???

I think that's a fairly simplified description of the funding, but that aside, how else would they be funded?  given we don't get paid I don't think many people would be keen to pay $x per week for it.

Thats the $50,000 question.........Also one has to have a look at the cost of land and the shed and why when you says its for a fire station the price goes up....

it's not cos it's for a fire station that the price goes up, it's cos it's for govt.  If I was a builder I'd charge lots more for govt jobs to cover all the paperwork, delays and wrangling not to mention the risk of it taking ages to get paid.

personally I don't see anything wrong with building them out of iron but maybe I'm weird cos I'd be happy with a house based on a converted shed (wife won't have it though).

591
as blinky mentioned, the VFBA is the "union" of the CFS, and since it's made up of all of us, you get out of it what you put into it.

Blow the budget and they will still pay,the MFS do.

exactly, you spend what you have to.  My group will be over budget come the end of June (if it's not already) but tough.

ALL Rescue / Re: LPG Isolation valve on AU Falcons
« on: May 19, 2006, 11:22:03 AM »
has anyone seen anything official about this yet??

no. I used to have an AU sedan on gas (heap of junk by the way) and the value was in the boot the same as any other LPG cars I've seen.  Maybe the factory gas installs are different...

toast, you can get away with 3 on your tanker, you only really need that many crew on a tanker I reckon, heck, even 2 does the job. rescue, well in your case pumper will be there most cases anyway so your cool.

the SOP of 4 does not apply to tankers (or the small single-cab 14s like landcruiser utes).  I reckon 2 is the right number for a tanker.  3 is a squeeze in the cab and usually leaves one person standing around with nothing to do anyway.

regarding do you respond or not with only 2 crew, if other brigades have been responded as well, you contact your group duty officer and check, then tell SHQ you are responding short-crewed and make up the numbers with another brigade at the scene (even if that means parking one truck).

if it's a problem for a brigade and the next closest brigade is miles away, then your group has to organise what they're going to do beforehand (that's what response plans are for).

Depending On Your Phone You Can Copy The Ringtont To Your PC Via A Data Cable Or Blue Tooth Then Upload It To A Website. Then Depending On Your Phone You Can Connect Via WAP & Download The File Straight To Your Phone.

problem for me is damn nokia only seems to understand .mid files.  Getting it to/from the phone is no problem (can also use infrared or MMS).  I still haven't managed to get a ringtone that works though.

Cant we just put this thread behind us and get on with important ones as this one is months old and i dont want to start any arguements

if you want the thread to die you'd better stop posting in it.  And don't you think it's a little bit strange you say you don't want to start any arguments and yet have described your brigades response to a callout that, shall we say, does not present your brigade in the best light.
