My own view - there are allot of risks associated with this - we place water in people tanks and they get sick - who is liable??? CFS is, even if our tank were clean, out pump faultless and our hoses for delivery clean, (mmm now show me a brigade or manufacture who will guarantee this) who guarantees the cleanliness of the tank we are putting it into.

Exactly.

Who Pay's For The Water That We Are Using I Don't Think SA Water Would Be 2 Happy About It.

Effectively it could be classed as theft......

And in the end, i wouldn't recommend drink it..... no way of tell how peoples body's will react to the stuff (foam etc). Would be a legal nightmare!

My understanding is that brigades/members will be wearing the cost if they want them.....

SA Firefighter General / Re: Training and Assessment

Twas a Map and Nav Course.... Traditionally a very high failure rate (+75%).... The problem was a lot of people walked away from the course feeling quite disheartened.....

The theory was to break the entire course up into 2 modules. 1 for map reading, and the second for field navigation.  The other reason for the idea was for re-accreditation purposes. so you dont have to do the entire course again, and just choose to do the assessment.

Personally if i go to a weekend course, i expect to be asessed on the weekend....

SA Firefighter General / Training and Assessment
« on: June 06, 2005, 08:26:45 AM »
I had the opportunity to partake in a pilot course on the weekend....

The general Idea of the course was that there will be no requirement to do the assessment on that day. IE - do the training; then.... if you don't think your ready for the assessments, do them later when you are ready; or decide its not really for you and don't do it at all.....

I reckon the idea has some merit, but it has the potential to leave things a little open ended as such....

What are other peoples thoughts???

The $29 maintenance costs include transport, which is to be arranged by LION.....

R1 will hold stock of about 20 Sets as pool stock.....

The gear IS (contry to prior comments) allowed to be used for training....

Group reported last night that the clause relating to "landholders lighting their own fire if they believe their property is under threat" has been dropped. Now we just need to worry bout the make-up of the board its-self.......

Maybe SAFECOM might take care of this situation and buy from the same people, so if MFS want 10 pumpers and CFS want 10 pumpers we go to bid for 20 SAFECOM pumpers?

the idea has merit  :-D , just have to wait and see what SAFECOM brings.......

16 replys and 108 views.... 9 votes for the poll..... thanks to those who are happy to put there view across, but it doesnt seem as though a lot of people are willing to share! :?

I can think of a few R1 groups as well, Hence why the question of change has been thrown around i guess. Dictatorship or democracy, its an interesting thought really.....

It would be great to see a Scania in a CFS station..... No doubt it would be argued that MFS should be chipping funds for them though, considering that would be the main purpose for having them....

Then you start getting into the debate on having dedicated appliances, and weather they are financially viable to maintain etc..... money has to come from somewhere in the end....

It should be seen as a small step forward (we hope) in the evolution of the services. Maybe even a little tiny bit closer to amalgamation of all services....

Women of the Fire Industry / Re: Why?
« on: May 30, 2005, 11:11:21 AM »
Although I agree that we need to encourage women to join the CFS, we could also say that we need programmes to encourage younger people to join, or older, retired people to help with communications etc... :? :|

When trying to get people to join, its hard not to seem as if you are targeting a specific group. Take the last MFS intake, dont know how many of you saw the flier sent to brigades, but it was very "female" orientated. However, had a couple of words been changed in order.... would have been the exact opposite!

I agree, equity is important in anything we do, and should be highly encouraged. The key is attempting not to offended anyone else in the process, or create another minority....

Country Fire Service / Re: Appliance Driving
« on: May 30, 2005, 10:51:28 AM »
There is no actual requirement to be "trained" for driving P1, it has generally been left up to brigades to make there own judgements on how to assess drivers capabilities.

In saying that, last i heard the powers that be were looking at another 2 driving courses. In addition to defensive driving (with new appliances) they're looking at off road (4WD) and something else that i cant remember......

There is some merit in prototyping appliances. However in more cases there will always be a stronger argument for rehashing designs already in use. If the CFS decide to start issuing Pumpers then it would be very disapointing to see them go for something completely different to whats already out there..... however, in saying that there will always be a way of improving these things...

Put it down to "continuous improvement", and it could all be seen as prototyping anyway....

We have wet weather gear available to crew. however it is not standard stowage on the vehicle. Sould crew require wet weathewr gear, it is their responsability get a set off the rack and take it with them... Have trouble finding enough space as it is....

The problem with teaching people priority driving is that once taught, people will push the limits. By teaching Defensive driving only, CFS are covering their own donkey.

Any new drivers should be assessed by the brigade at normal training sessions. How they conduct themselves driving normally is always a good indicator of what their skills will be like in other situations.

Appointment is a very dangerous system. Particularly if there is no "maximum term" set, and can potentially lead to a lack of diversity across the ranks.

To say it will always come down to an election...... is a very open ended statement, although i do think that applying for the position to be voted as an adaption to SAAS' method would leave the crew with some feeling that they still have control of their futures...

The BA course is good fun, but make sure you do actually get plenty of sleep, its excellent to socialise heaps with members from other brigades/areas, but the second day and especially the third day are killers. You do HEAPS of practical work, and its pretty tiring.

You can say that again Coro..... have seen many a person have a "few social drinks"  on the saturday night and live to really regret it.... The other hint would be that you shouldn't eat toooo much for sunday lunch, the hard work after has been known not to tread people that nicely!

You cant help but feel a little sorry for some of the farmers who do it though..... Had one yesterday when the guy was happily extinguishing the fire...... untill the inlet hose to the pump melted on the exhaust (cocky unit). Yeah, you could say it was poor maintenance, and i wont disagree, but he was trying to do the right thing.....

Apply was an addition after James' comments about the was SAAS select personel to fill the rank structure....

I would think the purpose of the interviewers would be to make that decision. Otherwise there would be no real purpose to having such a system in place.

Assuming the trainers have the 'train small groups' and preferably 'workplace assessor' there are no problems with running specific modules at brigade level (I think you need to notify your region if looking at getting national competancy recognised). Our group ran a series of "update" sessions, where level 1 trained crew could update to current national standards...... it worked quite well really, and solved the problem of people needing prevent injury - for specialised courses.
