Wet Weather Gear - Do you have it?

We've been trying to get wet weather gear for our brigade for the last 5 years, and have been having a lot of trouble. One of the main is that "It's not standard stowage".

Although I'm pretty sure we should have it by next winter, I'm wondering how many other brigades are having this same issue? Considering that the CFS attends a substantial number of MVA's, and that MVA's often occur when its raining, maybe we should look at changing what is "standard stowage"...

We have wet weather gear available to crew. however it is not standard stowage on the vehicle. Sould crew require wet weathewr gear, it is their responsability get a set off the rack and take it with them... Have trouble finding enough space as it is....

Does that mean you don't keep it with the rest of your PPE? ie Do you only have as many sets as seats on the trucks?

sets of gear = seats on truck.... at the moment anyway. Gortex isnt exacty cheap!!  :-)

I think we have 6 or 7 sets, on a rack in the engine bays, if the weather permits and crews believe they will get soaked, they grab set as they run towards the trucks.  (Only have the jackets, not the pants... (We are Fireys.. can't be too soft  :-P )  hehehe.

Likewise at Morphett Vale, we have a rack which holds 14 jackets. If it's raining the crew grabs a jacket off the rack before boarding the appliance.

Do any of you have the trouble that because wet weather gear isn't personal, its not looked after properly? ie. put back in the truck wet, and it goes mouldy?

No trouble.

Ours is all on a coat stand near the Appliances in the Engine bay, if you need it, you grab it on the dash to the truck.  Everyone puts it back correctly, and so they should!  Laziness doesnt get people any where.  After all, we all gotta wear it, so people look after it.

Kyeema Group bought 5 sets of pants and coats for each brigade. All of these are large enough to fit over turnout gear. I think most brigades keep the gear on the truck. Only problem is 5 sets for two trucks means some one gets wet still.

Yes We Got Them, They Are Kept In The Trucks, However We Should Get Them Out More. The Other Day When We Responded I Only Had A Wet Weather Jacket, Couldnt Find The Pants LOL.  It Wasn't Raining That Much Any Way.

On the up side to this discussion, at least all the PBI gear has a gortex liner.......  8-)
Will keep a few people a bit drier...... :-D

I've found the el cheapo yellow PVC jackets ($13) and pants ($10) to be pretty good at keeping the rain off at flood type jobs. Cheap enough to replace regularly but get a long time out of them because it's worn so infrequently. Found no need to issue to individuals.

We have 6 sets at the station on hooks in the truck bay have been told by cfs that we can not wear it to anything but floods

hmm well thats a bit stoopid...

personally i dont bother wearing it at all... if its raining ill get a bit wet rather than not be able to move properly, as i find our wet weather gear completely uncomfortable...
but i would imagine that if it was your kinda thing,  wud just wear it ne-time you hought it might rain :-D

We get called out for flood on the Highway about 20 times a year so we have our wet weather gear on just over our own clothes and use helmets and gloves so its easy to move around. We are in a dry part of the state as well so lucky it only rains a few times a year. :lol:

U should find out about it blinky.


You arent meant to wear your turnout gear under it.. As it restricts movement..  Fire truck, if you are at a job where u are getting wet.. What happens when u get tasked to the Structure fire, and put on B.A crew.....  MASSIVE problems with steam related burns from ur gear being wet...

If the Wet weather gear is available.. May as well use it..
