Internal water pipes bursting in Adel Hills

From the GRN pager website, I noticed that quite a few CFS and SES were called-out last night or this morning to 'internal house flooding from the ceiling' in the Adelaide Hills.

Is this the cold freezing waterpipes ?

i have no idea. we weren't called out to any luckily though. I wouldn't want to be dealing with water on such a cold night.

Could be a specific water pressure problem for that zone.

Example, problem has caused the street pressure to hammer / rise beyond normal limits causing bursting....

A few years ago we experienced this, 5 houses in my streets all had the pipes burst, was caused by a pressure problem somewhere...

Failing that........ No idea !

Normally its from the hot water system but they put on a release valve on them which should help the problem. We normally get -5 and that caused a few solar panel's and water heaters to burst. cold nights still to come.

it is from the extreme coldness.  As water gets cold the pipe physical properties change, therefore two things can happen.
1:  Cracking of pipes from temperature as the water expands. The pipe expands.( example watch water when it freezes.
2.  If hot water is turn on cracking can also occur as temp change is too quick.

This usually only occurs in older houses due to the the life span of the water piping, and the grade of water piping used now is a lot better than years ago.

Water freezing in pipes causes a huge number of problems (seen some photos of a house in canada). Seeing as its colder now..... etc etc

Bit like... If you fill the sink with boiling hot water... Hold a glass under there for 20 seconds.. pull it out and pour water in it from the fridge........ It smashed into about 30 million pieces and you spill water all over the floor...

or, you could put an egg in the microwave for 30 seconds... and then spend the next half hour helping your aunt clean fried egg goo off the ceiling...
