got called to this RCR a couple of nights ago... quite a delay in the fire service being called, when i drove past to go to the station SAAS, SAPOl and the towie were already in attendance...

2 vehicles sideswiped on the corner, commodore pushed off the road, falcon pushed off the other side of the road and rolled over an embankment.
the guys from Blackwood popped the door of the Commodore to remove the entrapped driver....

funnily enough the door just fell off the falcon when i opened it to acess the bonnet release, obviously dodgy Ford manufacturing

the truck in the background is the Cherry Gardens air strip vehicle... at the moment Blackwood Rescue is offline having some maintenance done... and the rescue gear has been thrown in the back of the canter...

Roadway appears totally blocked in the photo. You can operate at the scene without one if the OIC is happy with it. If traffic was passing the scene however... Then yes they should have been worn..

On that.. If in PBI do you realise that the vest " reduces " the visability of crew members? As the PBI has more and better quality day night striping, a majority of which is covered when wearing one of those poxy, often non reflecting vests..

I believe PBI does not meet Australian reflective standards because it doesn't have vertical stripes on the front (although I agree with you, that its more visible than some CFS vests!)

I also believe that reflective vests must be worn when working in ANY roadway, whether its open or closed. This is a workplace services rule, not at CFS one.

Thats why you wear PBI Gold AND your vests. The only thing PBI doesnt get worn to, are grassies

Just wear it to everything except a non structure fire in summer. Is it true that if PPE had vertical reflective stripes going over the shoulder then vests would not be required or is that just an unsubstantiated rumour I heard?

I was going to reply with a smart arsed comment...re: wearing PBI. But I won't.. Some day people will realise common sense is the key to life, and some directives, should not neccasarrily be broken, but manipulated to serve a better cause and overall result in a safer outcome..

I was unaware of this, I was under the belief if the road was closed it was a different situation as nolonger an open roadway.. But, you are probably correct.

I do believe however you are exempt if there is a risk / situation of fire.

Show me the policy and we will stop wearing it. Interestingly if you speak to the people at HQ and Region they will tell you that 'we gave you the gear for a reason - wear it' however many Groups have put their own interpretation on that ruling and refuse to let anyone wear it to anything apart from structure jobs.

Lions own material says it should be worn to everything.

As for vests, we have enough for everyone on the truck, if you don't then just buy some more. They are essential stowage.
