Post by: Jimmy_91 on August 24, 2008, 05:18:12 PM
Well it's coming up to that time again, 5 - 13 September 08.

Just wondering if anyone on here is going on behalf of the CFS?

I am on Thursday 11th for the first half of the day.

Is it just me or did Region 1 people miss out on the notification for the Royal Show, no one in my group was notified.

Maybe they're trying to tell you something?

SES have an operational crew of volunteers rostered during each day of the RA&HS showgrounds. Not sure where the site will be or if it will be with a PR display.

I personally could think of better things to do, watch my grass grow, wash the car, polish the truck etc etc.

I love this.

People whine about the public not knowing about the CFS and that the CFS needs to rethink its image. Here is a great opportunity to be a part of a great way to inform the public of what we do these days - well at least the old static display used to be, yet no one can be bothered 'playing silly buggers all day'

Christ, if you can't give two hoots about PR gigs, then don't whine and complain about public perception.

Agree wholeheartedly numbers, we as emergency service providers need to make use of all the opportunities to expose people to what we do and I'm sure the vols that take part will enjoy the experience and meet new friends.
I also think that the government, that gets great voluntary emergency services that protect the majority of the state for a minimal outlay, need to truly recognise that fact(not the lip service we currently receive) and put some dollars into promoting the services.
Without a forward plan to rebuild vollie numbers, they are just going to continue to see a steady decline in vollie numbers, until it gets to the point that the majority of units/brigades are providing an unsatisfactory service to their local communities and the state as a whole!
Its not rocket science, its "Succession Planning" coz if we don't replace the ageing flagging current members, were doomed ,doomed, DOOMED I TELL YOU!................. sorry just love the dramatics :-D

Hmm, but just a little bit to far for me to travel as a volunteer to do something to life the profile of CFS. Don't know if you've noticed the price of petrol these days but I don't think I can come at the cost of that to get there and then the accommodation while up there

I can see your point Katrina however you should be able to get a Command car for this sort of thing, even better if you can get a couple of you from the area to attend.

I guess it will normally fall to those that are within reasonable travelling distance to do these sorts of things, I know our brigade are pretty much looking after one of the days.

But then it comes back to everyone needing to be told. I know a few that would have helped down there but no one had heard a thing about it.

Just remember to make sure you leave enough people home to staff the trucks, wouldn' be the first time a neighbouring brigade of ours defaulted as they were all at the Royal Show on the CFS stand !!

Must have been a big stand that year...  (or a small neighbouring brigade...)

Yeah and the fat controller would love me for that!!!!! Would have taken several things for that to happen - would have actually had to have been told about it, that would be a good start. If they don't ask for people to help in all the regions and brigades then how can it be said there is not enough volunteers as we havén't all been asked.
Also the idea of leaving enough crew on the ground is another issue, the last few jobs there has only been me for the first part of it so that would definately cause a problem and quite often the ones that are available to do things like that are the crew that is most readily available for jobs as well. Some of us also can't just take time off and still get paid for it, that means we lose income

Clearly.  I interpreted it as "all the brigade", you interpreted it as "all the available responders"...

That is what they are there for besides being the GO chariot, to be used for transport of CFS personnel to events to promote the CFS image

pretty sure my group got a fax from region about it, which was sent on to each brigade. It was read out at our last brigade meeting (or maybe it was the meeting before last, can't remember now).

I was a volunteer in the SES Field Command yesterday at the RA&HS show yesterday (Tuesday).

Congratulations to the CFS for being on the 'yellow brick' road tour. But if the SES volunteers received $1 for everytime we were asked yesterday 'I know you are not CFS, but where is the CFS display' we would be rich     :-D

The 'yellow brick' road route went past the SES site on its way to the CFS display site.

Oh well, at least SES got a little noticed and people knew we are not the same organisation.

Unlike SAAS and St John. It was last century that St John gave up the trucks and SAAS started but people still think we are the same.

A simple page to all members across the state would have fixed the notification issue, hell they can page to tell us the mobile phone service is going to be interupted.

As for command vechiles i will back up katrina, some are controlled to the extent that volunteers do not get to use them. But there is a second option that i have used, contact the region office and request a regional vechile, i have been given one in the past or they just apply pressure to the group to provide one.

katrina there is four in your group, two in the penola area and two on the other side.they can't use all four at once.

hmm will try to get my hands on it another time. Actually to be honest it isn't too bad really (just as long as we sit on Freddy Boy, tie him up and drug him should not be an issue) Nah it's usually not a problem for smaller things, actually the vehicle that was assigned to comms is now with one of the deputies as his ute was playing up I quite often take Fred's command vehicle if I go to Millicent or if there is something on, just don't know how things would go if wanted to go to Adelaide, but then again I didn't ask as I didn't know about Adelaide show anyway
But i have seen all four in action at once (i was in one of them at the time) but it was during summer and we were all a bit busy

Thats going to be really difficult to do Katrina  why not tie up all the group officers instead that would be soo much better  :-P

Yes it got a little confusing with St John senior people in green overalls, St John cadets in black uniforms and SAAS in blue overalls.

The public was so use to the green being first aid that they were taking a second look at the other uniforms before responding. Then add the orange of SES in the responder mix to a casualty in the showgrounds & it was very colourful     :-D

Well We took the kids to the show and some what disappointed with the CFS stand...Once again it was all about bushfire safety... Where is the image of CFS going if we keep on doing the samething?? We are more than a BUSHFIRE BRIGADE and its time that those that set the stand up have a better look at those that flock to the MFS stand and the police stand... The volunteers that where on the stand did a great job and my hat goes of to the guys and girls...As for the new 34 sitting there looked good but they could have done something about the rust on the pump and the exhaust system that the public where talking about on this a brand new appliance...

OHH well there is always next year....

I'd prefer the static display, but as mentioned about, it has to be more than "BUSHFIRE BUSHFIRE BUSHFIRE". Hell we could even do an RCR demo and hands on things like that. Get a big 34P down there, but why not a Pumper with full Urban/Rescue stowage.

The arena display is big and flashy, if only we could do both!

One day it could be a combined stand with SES, CFS & MFS at the one location. I understand they do this at Field Days but have not progressed the concept to the RA&HS Adelaide Show yet.

Actually the Mount Gambier show has the emergency services tent. CFS, Mets, SAAS, St John, SAPOL and SES are all in there.

This would be a good idea as we have both the emergency services and the catering in the one area.

Probably the reason they keep goin down the "bushfire Bushfire Bushfire line is because some of the not so smart resdience in areas of the state still don know what to do in a bushfire emergency!

Sounds good to me,why can't we have all emergency service's under the one big stand?? mind you my wife was happy at the MFS stand as she got to buy one of the MALE calanders and had it signed by one of the guys.......Time for change and time for us at long last to come under one tent and be more than just a bushfire display....

How about CFS/MEDIA ask for members to be part of a committee??

Ah Numbers good to see nothing changes. But I like the idea - full time professionals, rural fire fighters & the service that deals with all other emergencies in one area & does your plan include McDonalds as well seeing how you mentioned catering :-D Have a nice day!
cheers
