Times change. Look at the current pumpers, and then look at the old Stirling Pumper or Burnside 32. I don't think that many were 'purpose built' as such. Many are just trucks adapted to the task.

Medevac: Have you ever tried getting your knife out while wearing BA? Put it somewhere that it isn't fouled by straps or the like, and somewhere you can reach it with a single hand. You never know when youre going to need it. The upper left arm pocket on the PBI is a pretty good location and mine hovers between there and my left leg pocket.

I have a few of the items mentioned above, but where do you guys and girls keep all of the stuff. How big are your pockets??

What PPC do you have? I must admit the old Nomex gear, crica 1999 isnt the best for carrying gear, but still: Level 1: Gloves in overtrouser pocket, goggles/smoke mask in left tunic pocket, small hat in right tunic pocket. (oops, yes I carry a hat too). Level 3 gear: Wildfire Gloves in left over trouser pocket, Multitool clipped to right overtrouser pocket, structure gloves in right tunic pocket, Nitriles in left tunic pocket, flashhood on boots so it always goes on first.

CFS use the MCS2000 MKII has a know to scroll through all the channels.
SES " " " "     " " MKIII which has the keypad on the face.

(I think the MKII, MKIII bit is right... might be MKI, MKII... Brains not working well today.)

Ours have a keypad... (CFS) :?

So what do you carry with you? I carry a Leatherman multitool, a brigade issue Super SabreLite, a pair of Nitrile gloves for RCR, wildfire glove and structural gloves, and finally a flash hood. In my Wildfire PPC I have goggles and smokerag as well.

Yes, but when the money is being spend of stupid "SAFETY FIRST, COME HOME SAFE" pins, for every volly, then the question must be asked.

15 minutes... thats not bad consdering the travel time for Mt. Barker Ambos to bridgie? I guess if SACSD comes in, CFS and SES are going to be doing a lot more initial patient care at incidents, due to the travel time for the ambos.

You can have safety BA on scene with 6. Whats your point? 6 People on an appliance, is the max. Not to mention, if you bump it up to 7, you break the 1:5 command ratio. You keep thorwing more people on an applaince, its gets way too crowded.
Split your crew into "teams" who report back to the OIC. Bingo! 1:5 ratio back again...

Fire03Rescue: Up and down hills... ok... If you've got 5 people on one line, then youre certainly wasting 2 people, even three. The No. 2 should be making sure the hose isn't getting snagged.
No matter what you say, you can't argue that less workers is better. Many hands make light work. :)

Split them into teams all you like, you still have a 1:6 ratio. Im not saying you don't need more people, thats what other appliances are for. I'm just trying to suggest that on the ONE appliance, we should be trying to work smarter, not just throwing more people on board. Not to mention that if you've got two appliances, you can turn out (with one more person, or with GO permision, not) both appliances. That the way we do it sometimes, and for those brigades with a tanker, they can roll both their rural appliance AND their tanker.

Thats insane that you don't have at the minimum an omni-tool and the bascis on your pumper. Why do you keep getting knocked back?

2090 - a crew of 7 is better than a crew of 4.

there is absoloutely no possible argument there.

the job can be done with a crew of 4, sure.... but if you have the seven, then at least you have a safety BA crew on scene straight away so that crews can be commited inside the building safely.

You can have safety BA on scene with 6. Whats your point? 6 People on an appliance, is the max. Not to mention, if you bump it up to 7, you break the 1:5 command ratio. You keep thorwing more people on an applaince, its gets way too crowded.

It really depends on what brigades are in your surrounding area. If you are the only brigade for a long while then a dedicated rescue truc soundes reasonable because it can cut the people out then leave the fire cover appliance to clean up. Bt if you are a brigade that has a lot of close brigades say Stirling they could use a rescue pumper because there are resources that can fill the gap.

plus brigades with Pumper rescues should be careful not to tie them up at fires that dont require rescue gear.
The only problem with saying "Oh throw it all on a pumper" is that a few RCR brigades, including Stirling, have a huge amount of gear, well beyond the prescribed minimum, that they carry - all of which has been used at a job. Trying to fit all of it onto an applance that is meant to also double as a primary pumping appliance, or god forbid, a 34P is just silly.

The reason for seven, yes some people Will disagree and say wait for the other appliances
A few examples
House fire
4 in BA, 1 IOC, 1 Pump operator, 1 person getting water in = 7
Grass Fire 1 Line
1 IOC, 1 Pump operator, 5 on one Line ( 90m is a lot of hose to get working with in some areas)
If you went to a job like Mt Osmond 1 line with a crew of seven was still hard work on a day like that, the more the better, it must be safer less work than six
Grass Fire 2 Lines
1 IOC, 1 Pump operator, 3 on one line and 2 on the other.

House Fire:

2xBA(takes 38mm hose/branch to entry) 1xPump Operator(stretches 64mm to 38mm for entry, sinks Hydrant) 1xOIC/ECO.

Works with 4. If you have a spare person or two, they should be streching the lne to the front door, and/or sinking the hydrant. THEN those people spare can don BA. You won't have 4xBA going in without another appliance being there.

I went to Mt. Osmond, spent the day up and down goat country with 90m hose reels, plus canvas on the end, crew of 4. No issues what so ever. Maybe you need to teach your No. 2 on the hose how to haul hose correctly?

Pipster, CFS_Firey appears to have attempted to single out the dedicated rescue appliances, hence leaving Barker rescue out. Although he did miss Blackwood.

Where is the pump on Naracoorte rescue? Not trying to be smart or anything, I just cant understand where it is from the pictures of it on the Promo website? Is it hidden behind a locker?

So where does it say that SES are the control agency for trees down when its not stormy?

Not to mention that they are the primary turnout for animal rescue. I'm sorry, but its been FOREVER known that brave firemen climb ladders to save some poor kiddies cat. Now its idiots in orange.

Glen Osmond MFS have a button for the cross roads, port rush & mt barker rd intersection.

Are you sure? Last I heard they had to ring up to get them changed... I believe SAMFS Comcen can change lights in the metro area too...

No, they have control over the light of the M1/Port Rush/Cross Rd./Glen Osmond rd. locally at the station, then have to ring up with a route no. to get others changed. You should know this, with your COQ being there.

Ryan, Wouldnt you be turning your siren OFF, when you get near a job? Make things nice and comfortable for any casualties around? Or is it just your brigades way of saying "Look at us we're here" ?

Why PTO not seperate? Can yo pump and go efectively with PTO?

Bittenyakka, notice the "Aux Pump". Hence the Pump and Roll capabilities.

Fire03Rescue, twin cab with 7 seats? Christ, 6 people on an appliance is too many currently, what on earth do you need more people for?

One day the service will wak up and realise that you cant built a single applaince that will do Rural/Urban AND place Hazmat, Rescue, Structure, Rural stowage on it.

Take a look at Blackwoods appliance. There is no way known that that applaince could it the same amount of stowage as a dedicated rescue applaince. I assume that by dedicated rescue appliance, we are talking one without water or a water pump.
