SA Firefighter General / Re: Paging regular sitreps

Darius - does it matter? It costs

Um, no it doesn't...  There is no cost associated with sending messages.

The cost is per pager registered on the network - the services pay an annual fee for each pager whether it receives any messages or not.

This is why CFS had a push on completing pager audits not so long ago so that all "missing" pagers were deregistered, reducing the overall cost.

Country Fire Service / Re: Brigade Elections
« on: February 25, 2008, 07:05:42 AM »
I would suggest that this statement in the Regulations suggests that you must be present at the meeting to vote.

11—Brigade elections
(10) Each member of the brigade attending the meeting at which the elections are held is entitled to vote at the elections.

In cases like this, the Regulations override the brigade constitution.

I'd check with your Region's VSO to clarify this well before the meeting, so everyone is clear and there can't be any allegations of bias due to withholding information...

SAMFS / Re: K-codes for action taken
« on: October 21, 2007, 07:37:08 PM »
It's been explained to me by someone in the know that they're an expanded list of what is on the CFS AIRS reports.

For situation found - the number relates to the incident type number on the AIRS code.

For action taken - the number relates to the numbers found in the "action taken at incident" on the second page (Block A3) of the AIRS report. In cases where the number is not on there (like 15), the first number relates to the categories - so 15 is in the extinguishment series.

I don't have a list, but it's a start to work it out...

I believe that there was a policy a few (possibly up to five) years ago that was put out to brigades that it is recommended that people under 18 do not attend vehicle accidents, but it is up to the brigade captain and can be implemented on a case-by-case basis.

Several brigades decided that it would be best to implement a blanket rule that no under 18s go to vehicle accidents...

Thats why a good response to fixed alarm is a must.

Who says there wasn't a good response to the fixed alarm?

I was listening to the scanner at the time and from the sounds of it they had two appliances on scene at the rear of the premises.  They may not have been in view of the caller who reported the flame, but it sounded like they were still on scene dealing with the situation.

Really shits me when people give other brigades a bad name by not getting their facts straight and casting aspersions on their response!

And no, I'm not from the brigade, I just know how pissed I'd be if the same thing was said about my brigade.

1908915   16:59:22   09-09-07   Training needs to start at 1930 on the dot tomorrow. PPE has been re-aranged. Please allow extra time before training to arrive and locate PPE. Thanks, XXXXXXX CFS Hahndorf Info

And what if there is an incident between then and training?  Doesn't matter if you take a few extra minutes to go mobile while people are trying to locate their gear?

Im not saying Kapunda SES is the Best i have no idea how you got that perception.

The way that you continually rubbish your neighbouring emergency services gives the impresion that you consider yourselves to be far superior to them.

You give the impression that you prefer to bitch about them in public, rather than assist to resolve the issues.

To me, this is highly unprofessional behaviour...

Lets talk about Alarms mainly here. Why is the SOP 2 appliances ONLY? and NOT anything you can get. This time give me good reasons and not poxy "we look like dads army" or " it isn't safe to drive"

The response for an alarm is the same as the response for a first alarm structure fire...  Under SOP 2.1 Initial Rsource Resopnse Schedule, there is no outline for an Alarm response, all Alarms are treated as a structure until it is confirmed they are not...

It is becoming increasingly obvious that you haven't been to many incidents, especially "incidents of note" if you cannot see the valid reasons that have been presented in this thread for minimising the number of resources that are sent to a scene.

It is cowboys like you that give the service a bad name...

Why am I bothering, it appears you cannot listen to reason and arbitarily dismiss people's arguments because you think they are "poxy".

also 641 thats along way out of there area about 15kms out of there area and they only had two personel plus the cfs never made it out the door due to no driver

Grasshopper - some advice.  Don't go casting aspersions on the capabilities of your fellow Emergency Services that you work closely with on a public forum.  It will come back and bite you in the arse.

Kapunda is not big enough to avoid the ruckus you are causing...

If you ever stuff up, be prepared to be treated equally if not worse than the way you are treating your coworkers.

The way you have been carrying on like a pork chop has certainly lowered my perception of Kapunda SES as a professional organisation...

Mate, it just looks silly see multiple appliances turning up when they don't need to be. We tout an attempt at professionalism, yet look like dads army out for some excitement when the pager goes off.

Agreed!  There is nothing worse than an incident scene that is cluttered with unrequired people and appliances.

I've seen vehicle accidents (single car) where there are five CFS appliances on scene.  Add that to two ambulances, two or three police cars and a towie...  The scene becomes cluttered and people are unable to work unimpeded.  This is particularly annoying when the path to the vehicle involved is blocked by several non-required appliances and people who need close access (extra ambulances, rescue appliances) aren't able to get close to the incident.  Not to mention the increased traffic congestion that is caused by this number of appliances.

Same thing that can be said for structure fires.  Everyone is tripping over everyone else's gear and there are 20 guys standing in a circle with their arms crossed chatting whilst the others are working.  There is no need for that level of clutter at an incident. This is particularly relevant with rural properties with difficult access.

By all means respond all the resources NECESSARY to effectively and efficiently deal with an incident, but sending people for sightseeing is unnecessary.  It can impede operations and unnecessarily put all crews at risk.

Sounds like Croatia is copping it as well...

http://www.theage.com.au/news/World/Firefighters-die-battling-Croatian-fire/2007/08/31/1188067317169.html

Five firefighters died and 14 were injured on Thursday evening as they were encircled by a forest fire on Croatia's central island of Kornati, the state-run news agency HINA and other local media reported.

Police in the nearby city of Sibenik only confirmed that 14 firefighters were injured at the island of Kornat and there was no immediate official confirmation of the deaths, which were reported by HINA, the state-run Croatian television and two other TV channels.

Zeljko Sosa, a local firefighting official, said the wind apparently suddenly changed its course, spreading the fire that then trapped the firefighters inside the firing circle.

Private TV RTL said all five dead were members of the local volunteer firefighting brigade and that they were in their 20s.

Among the 14 injured, four are in a life-threatening condition, said a doctor on duty in the clinic in Zadar, a city on the coast across from Kornat where most of the injured are being treated. He spoke on customary condition of anonymity.

Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was heading to Zadar to visit those injured overnight, the government said in a statement.

The fire was still raging on the island, which has only hundreds of residents.

Croatia has battled a record number of fires this summer, but mostly only in forests.

Before Thursday's incident at Kornat, a firefighter who died on Wednesday while putting down the fire on another island was the only casualty of those fires.

RescueHazmat, winter is a figmant of our imaginations these days, the seasons go; summer, autumn, spring- or alternatively, wet and dry, like the territory. (Not that we get much rain anyway).

Perhaps it should be the Dry and the Drier Season?

i understand that as a captain you have to make decissions that can affect the outcome of peoples lives but can i ask how often do you have mulitple services telling you to hurry up or complainig that it took 10mins extra to be paged or telling you how to do your job i understand that at times you have to say no to your BA crews going in or what ever but as a volunteer firefighter how often do you get to an mva and get to decide who lives and who dies im pretty sure i know the answer i know that no matter what service your in it gets stressful but as an ambulance officer i am responsible for the protection of life and prefention of futher harm as an ambulance officer i dont need crews complaining that we are going slow or that they had to wait an extra 10mins before they got paged but reflect on your time as an ambo how often did this happen to you and now as a captain how often do you complain. complaining to the crews there isnt going to help you need to follow the chain. i am getting used to other services complaining and i love listening to it and laughing PIP this was not aimed at you or any paticular service all i was trying to get accross is that fact that VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE OFFICERS are under a lot of presure at jobs and dont need the extra presure put on them by other services infact my team are looking in to being trained in basic princepls or RCR so they know what the RCR crew are able to do and mabye make it a bit quicker between arriveing and getting the RCR crews working

That's totally harsh and uncalled for.

You are obviously removed from all reality of situations.

How about the pressure that Volunteer Ambulance Officers put on Volunteer Rescuers (be it CFS or SES) that they need the patient out of the vehicle 10 minutes ago and can't they go any quicker?  Then tell them stop and change their minds on how they want the patient extricated five times in ten minutes?

It sounds like you had a specific incident that needs to be sorted out in the correct manner - through your chain of command.  Whinging on this forum will not help the situation.

It is unfair that you tarnish every volunteer with your negative experience at one incident.  Get some perspective!

Oh, and punctuation helps get your message across a lot clearer...

just for background info, probably should have put it in mys first post, Quarry road is in our area...

1)  The RCR directory goes by suburb, so the response was correct according to that.

2)  The correct procedure for changing the database is for your group to sit down with the other group in question, agree that it needs to change and then submit the paperwork to region.  It was not an MFS error, it was an error in the data provided to them.  Whinging on here won't fix it - it needs to go through the correct chain.

Your posts on this matter are pointless and are just stirring scheiße that doesn't need to be stirred.

Contract for the next batch of 34's has gone to Varley in NSW on Isuzu Chassis not QLD.

Excellent - let's keep changing builders each batch.  Nothing like a bit of variety in the fleet.

Just as long as they don't end up looking like the NSWFB Varley Commanders.

Least if you keep it with one style of ageny.  such as fire,  we all know who to call.

Considering that dispatch for MFS, CFS and SES all come from the same place, your argument is null and void...
