Forum Suggestions / Re: SEFF to improve SAFF
« on: March 20, 2007, 03:31:12 PM »
Dear Admin:
My suggestion to improve this forum is to start up a second one called SE Firefighter (SEFF) so we can clear out 90% of the BS and letting SA Firefighter get back to talking about dealing with real emergencies.

Do i dare ask what the SE stands for?

Cant be South East as we are known as the limestone coast

Has anyone found any good flashover footage on you tube?

I took some backdraught footage at Brukunga but it seems it is already on the internet anyway! Nothing is sacred
http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=-5426397952334088372&hl=en-AU

I thought I had flashover footage too, but its AIT stuff showing gas cooling and its really poor quality.

I didnt do it  :-D

There is a video of the dolls house backdraught you took also.

Rob Turnbull would be the lieutenent your referring too....Seems to be a great bloke with alot of knowledge.

All Equipment discussion / Re: 50mm hose
« on: March 20, 2007, 03:26:10 PM »
What you have to remember is that MFS appliances have true High pressure lines which put out the same amount of water as a 38mm line therefore they just use H.P lines and not 38s. They use 50mm lines purely as a working length on the end of 64mm lines to make it easier to handle. Using the 50mm hose loses very little volume and increases pressure.

So in answer to your question no they shouldn't be on any other appliance other than a pumper.

This is probaly the best comment of the thread.  Unless you have actually used it then you probaly wont see a need for it.

I dont wish to cause a storm here but....

If the MFS is ultimately taking over this area then why is the CFS putting a pumper in here?  Is this to provide a support to the MFS or will Seaford still primarily have control of the area, therefore under the SFEC require a pumper?

The only reason i ask is because we complain about duplication of resources yet to me it appears to be happening here.

Darn tootin.  No need for it.

38mm gives enough pressure/water for any internal attack.

64mm is great for water supply and large surround and drown jobs.

The very few occasions when it could be handy is not enough to go put it onto our already overflowing trucks.

Perhaps abolishing Groups might change things.

This was rumour was making the rounds about a year ago.  Not entirely a stupid idea.

When there is a big job going down is there such thing as a logical decision in the first 30 mins?

I can understand about not putting all your eggs in one basket but really the 5 closest resources should be responded?  At the worst  you would have to divert crews if there was another incident.

When it comes to strike teams etc then skipping groups/brigades it all makes sense.

Even the multi million dollar formula one cars can break down , so any fire truck is vulnerable to failure under extreme conditions.

You wouldnt be watching the Grand Prix by any chance?

But i guess the way they justify it is by saying without these resources Forestry SA would go broke because of the losses incurred due to fire damage.

I can think of 8 towers but i might be missing some

Mt Gambier
Penola North
Comaum
Mt Edward
Mt Benson
Mt Burr
The Bluff
Furner

There isnt many areas these towers cant see which is handy.

Then there is the cost of the Firekings, staff, spotter plane etc etc.

Would be worth millions but could save billions!

We havent had that problem as such but a few groups around here will respond every truck in their group before responding neighbouring groups appliances even though they maybe closer.

A few weeks ago there was an incident at the Auspine mill in Tarpeena.  Tarpeena, Pleasant Park & Wandilo were called but not Nangwarry who is only 7km from Tarpeena and closer then the rest.  Compton was then called for night shift who are further away again.

Am i missing something or are we not all on the same team!

How much would it cost to keep the tower running for a year?

As it is run by volunteers that would keep costs down.

Is the tower owned by the CFS? or Leased?  What about the land? Rent?

Cost of the radio licences? Power?

If the tower is owned by CFS and all that costs is the power to run it and the lease on the GRN radios i wouldnt see it going past $5000 a year.  Its probaly worth more then $5000 to the people of the hills?

Blue, Remember the fireking we were working with on the side of the bluff friday night?

That was about 6 lengths up a 30 degree? angle and the fireking was screaming.  Imagine a CFS truck trying to do that. haha
