bittenyaka - it doesnt have anything to do with that i dont think.. from my experience there are two types of brigades...

1/ follows SOPs for standard responses, standard crewing, out the doors in a timely manner and defaults when they need to...

or

2/ does whatever they want, goes everywhere priority one even if its just bob in the QAV 30minutes after page, go whether they have 1 or 12 crew crammed into the truck & are lucky if they go anywhere in 20minutes who cares about defaulting..

end of the day, there are brigades that do the right thing (and thats what it is called when you follow SOP and provide a correct & reasonable response to an incident) and then there are brigades that do what they want... it has been said in many other threads, end of the day the OIC of an incident needs to justify there actions, and that includes stop calling or responding over the top resources.

Nicely put Mack. Simple when you look at it that way.

It is a known fact that many rubbish fires end up being structure fires due to wheelie bins and/or industrial bins pushed up against the building. If its Seaford brigades area they can send two appliances if they want to

You can't just respond appliances because you want to. There are response plans that need to be followed (especially in the Mawson Group). Sending 2 appliances to a rubbish fire in case it involves a structure is a bit of a cop out. With that theory you better send 8 appliances in case that structure happens to be an A class risk.

Deal with the job you have and not what it could be. The least amount of 15 tonne priority 1 appliances running red lights on the road the better.

It's a bit of a concern that a nearby brigade to us send their 2nd appliance to nearly everything. If you ask me an additional 10 (or so) tonne truck traveling up to 20kph over the speed limit to get to a backyard burn or rubbish fire is a recipe for disaster.

It's even more of a concern that it may take a disaster for our Group to ask questions as to why the response plans weren't followed, or even worse...the coroner.

Thanks for the response guys. I did report it to the GRN help desk. Would be interesting to see if any more pop up on members pagers.

Country Fire Service / SPAM on GRN pagers
« on: May 07, 2006, 01:49:39 PM »
Just curious if anyone has been receiving SPAM on their pager. Friday morning at 0430 (yes 4:30am) I received a message about employment with a well established company.....or something like that. And also said that they accessed my details from the public web. Can't remember the full details.

Anyway then one of my brigade members mentioned that they had seen it a few times appear on the pager program.

I wasn't impressed.

(If this has been mentioned elsewhere please point me in the right direction.)

We don't often use speaker mic's with our VHF's, bit small I think. Would be good if the radio beeped when you hit the PTT like the GRN's. Then you would know if you're pushing the right spot.

Nothing worse than sending a lengthy message (or think you are) and getting no reply.

I was always taught at courses and the CFS/SES Leadership course:-

"praise in public, discipline in private"

Why does it not occur to anybody that the page that was sent out was intended ONLY for Seaford members which would "theoritically" be the case. If there was no online pager decoder we (the public) would not know of this message so it would be private.

The messages on the site are intended just for those who it is addressed too.........If its not on your pager, its not for you.

I agree with you F/F Matt.
We don't know if its that brigade's policy or not to send out messages like that. My brigade has done it in the past when we were going through a critical time. We found that making people aware of the situation often brought people back in area for further callouts.
I do believe it could have been worded better. It appears to have a little sarcasm/in your face attitude in it. Not good for moral.

Constructive comments on brigades pager messages is good but criticism without knowing the facts in dangerous.

Recently, a unit was set up in the hills with number plate recognition device which scans number plates as you drive plast, and if a known arsonist went past it would flag it.

Who does the recognition device notify when you drive past??

my brigade (upper sturt) goes to a few tree jobs. some are pathetic things that barely deserve the title tree. i remember on the night of the big floods in the hills someone called in a fallen tree n when we go there it was a wattle bush that would've been a metre in diameter. I recall us just pushing it off the road, didn't even need cutting.

Nice to see someone get back to the topic at hand.  :-D

In further response to P.F's comments.  My optinion only

Both MFS and CFS have a job to do, wether it be as a professional paid service or as a volunteer service.

You did mean to say : Both MFS and CFS have a job to do, wether it be as a professional paid service or as a professional volunteer service. Didn't you??

I know CFS means "Country" Fire Service, but that doesn't mean that a tree down is automatically their task,

Couldn't agree more.

The very reason we respond priority 2 to these types of incidents would indicate to me there or no real urgency to get to these jobs. We could list a number of scenarios that have potential to escalate but it doesn't mean the fire service should be called upon for all of them. Unfortunately all calls aren't received in one dept (eg MFS 000), if they were someone could have better control over what service went to what job.

What's your thoughts on the fact that it would take quite alot longer to remove a tree which has the potential to cause vehicle accidents? Do you still think it should be the SES/councils job?

Yes.

Maybe we should respond CFS to everything SES go to because we can get there quicker in most cases (sarcasm).

Didn't they respond Smokey to entice it off the road??

There has been some genuine passionate replies to this thread and all have been interesting. Me personally, I think it should be SES or an emergency response from the local council that deal with these types of calls. And as for the debate over MFS/CFS responding, if the job's in your patch then your it.
I have just noticed an increase of these type of calls over the years, especially with a couple of brigades in my group. Some of which have also responded to horses or cows on the road (now theres a can of worms for ya). Soon we'll be responding to water on the road...lol.
I just hope it isn't the "we pay the emergency service levy so we can respond you to what we want" syndrome. Or maybe it's the local brigade receiving the call via ALERTS and can't say no factor.

ps Assisting SES during multiple calls like storm damage i don't have a problem with. Good to get together every now and then.

Heard a comment from an SES volly a few weeks after some storm damage we assisted them with referring to some of the calls they received. (In particular a broken tile on a roof i think).

"Can't believe the nerve of some people, think we might change our name to the State Convenience Service".

Had to laugh. :-D

Sounds too familiar thou.

Apologies if this or something similar has been discussed previously.

I was curious to how many people on this forum respond (with their brigade) to tree(s) on the road?
Are we responding to more of these type incidents than ever before?
Is it our job to respond to these type of jobs? Is it an emergency?

Any thoughts?

Speaking to a technician after he set one up in Strath, he said he hardly release his finger from the test/alarm button before CFSHQ had it on their screens. Compare that to MFS receiving it upto 30sec later it sounds like it will benefit our response/arrival times.

« on: February 05, 2006, 12:20:08 PM »
If you were to have a fire in or around the theatre area then you wouldn't give it a second thought, as Medevac mentioned priority is for us to protect life and property....(common sense prevailing of course)

As for a general alarm where the circuit your investigating covers a theatre area or the theatre itself you can always utilize the staff to tell you whether the smoke or thermal detector has a light lit up on it. No need to go trampling through the area if its unnecessary.
