The blaze, which gutted the Hungry Jack's on Liberator Drive, is believed to have started in the kitchen.
Forty firefighters took 60 minutes to contain the inferno that started about 6.30pm, its intense heat twisting metal.
MFS spokesman Pete Reynolds said it is not known how many people were in the restaurant when the fire started.
"When the first crews arrived the store was already being evacuated," he said.
Customers at a neighbouring Red Rooster restaurant were also evacuated.
Red Rooster employee Michael Purnell said: "There was just so much smoke and there's nothing left of the roof."
Wedding photographer Raphael Jeczalik, 44, of Burton, said the heat was ferocious.
"I had just finished shooting a wedding and had grabbed food from across the road and someone yelled out Hungry Jack's is on fire," he said.
"It looks like it started in the exhaust and spread to the roof."
